Ten Hag Bashes Complacent Man United after a Costly One-All Draw

Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag’s side was held to a 1-all draw at Old Trafford by Twente in the league phase of the Europa League. Manchester United had first taken the lead thanks to a sublime Christian Eriksen goal, however, it wasn’t enough to take the needed three points from the Dutch side. Lammers equalized late in the 2nd half stalemating the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw.

Ten Hag commented about the game and he was very displeased with how his team failed to secure the necessary 3 points against his boyhood club. Ten Hag who started his career with Twente, and also spent the majority of his footballing career there addressed his team as being complacent for allowing Twente to find their way back in the game. The draw has made it twice in a row for the Red Devils as on the weekend they also managed a nil-nil draw at Crystal Palace. Ten Hag will be hopeful the draws can end soon enough as they prepare for Spurs at the weekend.

The Red Devils went in the game against Twente in the Europa League with the hopes of securing a crucial three points. It started well for them, moreover, it didn’t end as they planned. Manchester United took the lead. With a sublime goal from Christian Eriksen.

The Danish midfielder struck a beautiful shot at the box to give United the lead. However they could have increased the lead with opportunities falling into the hands of Zirkzee, Rashford, and Diallo, however, the scoreline remained one-nil until the 80th minute. A beautiful play from Twente, saw Lammers drive into the box unmarked, and then fire a left-footed strike into the top corner beating Onana. Manchester United had to manage for a draw.

Ten Hag assessment

The Dutchman was very unpleased and he believed his team could have finished off the game early on. Ten Hag analyzed how his side gave the visitors a reason to hope for something in the game. Which they eventually found.

He said: “We kept them alive when 1-0 up controlling the game and then you have to be consistent and keep going in the second half, we dropped the level and gave a goal away. We didn’t finish it off, we had to go for the second goal and they stay alive and we get punished with a mistake from ourselves. The goal it’s a team, the player of Twente can dribble over the whole pitch without being stopped but then can’t give a goal away like this.”

Ten Hag on the Game

The Dutchman further spoke about how his team had a flawed display late on in the game. He was very critical of how his side lacked the focus and ambition in the game.

He said: “It’s about we have seen some good structure but you have to keep going for the whole game and when 1-0 up you have to keep going for the second. The first game is important you get a win. It was the game of their life, they fought for every yard and we didn’t. 99 percent is not enough, you have to give 100 percent, you have to kill the game, finish it off, we are leading 1-0, but you have to go for the second goal, then you kill the game.”

He finally added: “Especially as we are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to perform, prove the point, and especially today in the second half we were too complacent, we didn’t bring it over the line and, as a team, you have to bring this.”
