Television Schedule for OSU in 2024 is Crazy

Ohio State Safety Television

The Ohio State Football television schedule is crazy and, as of now, mostly unknown. This represents the perils of being highly ranked. Television executives want Ohio State to be on in primetime and like to use Ohio State to sell new television networks.  This happened last Saturday when many people could not watch the game. This article will begin by examining the schedule and hypothesizing what may happen with those many remaining TBD games.

Ohio State Football Television Schedule

Ohio State’s television schedule is quite confusing. The first three nonconference games, which Ohio State won by a combined score of 157-20, occurred in the afternoon. They were available for viewing on major networks like NBC (the National Broadcasting Corporation) and the Big Ten Network, which exists to televise athletic contests. The fourth game against Michigan State was also on NBC but was in primetime and started at 7:30 pm Eastern. This way the highly ranked Ohio State football team could be on in primetime, The football game ended at about 11 pm Eastern.

For the remainder of the football season, There are games against Iowa, Oregon, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, and Michigan.  If they are successful in that schedule, the Big Ten Conference championship football game and the new national title football tournament will follow. All games, except those against the University of Michigan, are TBD. The football game against the University of Michigan is at noon Eastern and on Fox. On Black Friday, like always.

It is a good bet the football games against the University of Oregon, Penn State, and one of the three other to-be-determined football games against Purdue University, Northwestern University, or Indiana University will be televised in the evening during primetime. The Big Ten Conference championship game will be in primetime, as will the football games during the college football playoff.

Television Money Makers

The perils of being a highly ranked football team with attractive and famous players are that the television networks view the Buckeyes as a money maker and treat them accordingly. The Ohio State football game against Michigan State University was on the Peacock television network. Not many people pay the extra money needed to buy this subscription service from NBC compared to some of the other streaming services. The network hopes its deal with the Big Ten will increase subscribers.  Television executives also want to get Ohio State football games on during primetime, when they feel more people will watch.

However, these games end too late for many people in the Eastern time zone to watch the fourth quarter. Couple this with the fact that games in the College Football Playoff, which is newly expanded (all about money), are on weeknights when many people have to go to work the next day. This is completely unworkable.

Conclusion

The Ohio State football team is a big draw with marquee players. Ohio State has plenty of alumni playing in the National Football League and are always a highly-ranked team. When television network executives are lucky enough to get a Buckeyes football game, they see dollar signs. This can be frustrating for the fans who want to watch their favorite team.
