Scotland isn’t a team that most people have to keep an eye on in terms of making it to the finals – let alone the quarters or semis, in a major tournament. However, with the new Euro 2024 squad that the gaffer picked, we could see some surprise upsets with this talented bunch in the upcoming international tournament.
Despite the ‘lads’ in Team Scotland being ranked 39th in the FIFA rankings, there was a time when they ranked in the top 15 spots in the world. Maybe if they do well in their upcoming friendlies, gain confidence, and go into the Euro 2024 summer competition with their heads held high, they can prove to the world that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Team Scotland
Manager Steev Clarke had a tough decision to make when it came to narrowing down the extensive squad to choose the group that would be going to the Euros this summer. He had to choose just 26 players to don the Scottish kit, cutting some big-name stars and up-and-coming youngsters who were keen to make the final list.
Lewis Ferguson and Aaron Hickey were injured and unable to make the list, dealing a huge blow to the team. Plus, Lyndon Dymes and Ben Dak, a Liverpool youngster who is expected to get more first-team minutes this year, were not fit enough to be considered for the tournament.
But, that doesn’t mean that the squad is lacking in talent, creativity, and tactical awareness. Scotland beat one of the top-ranked teams in the world, Spain, in a thrilling 2-0 victory with McTominay emerging as one of the leaders and driving forces of his home country’s side.
Now, Team Scotland will have to compete with the likes of Hungary and Switzerland in Group A to see if they can claim the top spot and automatically progress, or earn second spot and see if they can make it to the next round. Earlier this year, Team Scotland lost to the Netherlands and a shocking defeat to Northern Ireland, giving them a chance of what to expect in just a few weeks.
Team Scotland Defenders
One of the most well-known defenders who have been chosen for Team Scotland is Kiernan Tierney, the previous Arsenal FC man in the EPL who has since changed to Real Sociedad in La Liga in Spain. Other defenders are Ryan at Watford, Liam Cooper at Leeds United, Scott McKenna at FC Copenhagen, Grant Hanley at Norwich City, Greg Taylor at Celtic, and Anthony Ralston at Celtic.
We think that Ralston and Taylor could take the field together, as they have experience playing with one another in the Scottish league for Celtic. And, of course, who can forget Robertson, one of the most prolific Scottish defenders who still plays for the Reds at Liverpool?
Team Scotland Midfielders
One of the biggest names on the squad list that Scotland has in their locker is McGinn. He is one of the key players for Team Scotland, captaining the midfield, stringing together passes, and putting in an amazing workload every single time he takes the pitch. He was one of the crucial players for Aston Villa this year and hopes to do the same for his country this summer.
Another key midfielder for the team is Mctominay, a dynamic attacking midfielder who shone in the Premier League this season. He not only helps put together passes with the midfield three, but he slots through incredible passes to the wingers and scores goals from outside of the box.
Team Scotland Attackers
Last but not least, the Scottish attackers that will surely score at least one or two goals for Team Scotland is Lawrence Shankland from Hearts in the Scottish Premier League, James Forrest at Celtic, Tommy Conway for Bristol City in the Prem, and Lewis Morgan for New York Red Bulls in the MLS.
