Team Portugal is going into the upcoming summer tournament looking stacked. They have retrained older veterans who can help guide their team during tough moments and secured youngsters who have the energy and vibrant attitude to propel their team toward victory when the rest of the squad is feeling tired.
Portugal has a lot on their shoulders, as they look to win another trophy and secure the crown as they did previously. Team Portugal has a great blend of old and new, with Roberto Martinez the man in charge of selecting the abbreviated squad to attend the Euro 2024 this summer in Germany to try and bring home the glory back to their country.
Team Portugal Defenders
Some of the players to watch in the Portuguese team are the defenders, as these are the men who will be the ones keeping the ball out of the back of the net to try and replicate the win the team saw in the Euro 2016 tournament.
Antonio Silva is a fantastic get from Benfica, whereas Joao Cancelo is a young and talented fullback from Barcelona FC who will be able to run up and down the wings all day long. He will probably be partnered with Ruben Dias from Manchester City, a stalwart veteran defender for Pep’s side who featured in almost every match this past Premier League season.
Other Premier League defenders in the squad include Diogo Dalot, a talented defender from Manchester United, possibly paired with Nuno Mendes from the French giants, Paris Saint-Germain.
Team Portugal Midfielders
In the middle of the park, the engines of the team, we have players from all over the world in various domestic leagues. Bruno Fernandes is the Manchester United captain and #8 who was the playmaker and creative passer for ten Hag’s side this past Premier League campaign. He could be partnered with Ruben Neves, who currently plays for the Saudi Pro League for Al Hilal.
Another Premier League midfielder who could feature in the Portuguese squad throughout the tournament includes Matheus Nunes and Bernardo Silva, two midfielders for Manchester City who can work well together, string together one and two-touch passes, and thread the needle to find the final pass to the strikers.
Team Portugal Attackers
The final line that needed selection for Martinez’s Team Portugal was the attackers – and people had questions about who he was going to choose.
Martinez decided to go with who he knows best and who is currently making an impact for their current club. Cristiano Ronaldo had to be on that list. Not only is he the country’s leading goal scorer, but he had a great season for Al Nassr, netting in almost every single match he played and earning the position of top goal scorer.
Another striker that you should keep your eyes on when the tournament starts is Joao Felxi at Barca, a crafty and creative winger who can beat players on 1v1 and cross the ball into the box. Other key finishers for the Portuguese team include Diogo Jota for Liverpool and Pedro Neto for Wolves.
Martinez had a hard job of finding the best player for Team Portugal, but he chose a talented bunch who had the potential to win the entire tournament yet again.
