Team India has decided to play only one warm-up match before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament is co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. This decision marks a significant change in India’s readiness for the major ICC event.
Reasons for change
Customarily, Team India has played at least two warm-up matches before the ICC events. Nevertheless, the players are getting weary because of the vast distances they cover. This has led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to rethink its approach. Thus, the particular team has chosen to play only one warm-up game this time.
The only warm-up match will take place in New York, where the Indian team will be stationed for the tournament. In the beginning, Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) proposed a trial match in Florida. Nonetheless, Indian players announced their refusal to fly from New York to Florida and back for only one match on the grounds of exhaustion and the problem of travel.

Commercial Significance of Warm-Up Games
Warm-up games are very valuable for teams business-wise, as they bring huge money in terms of monetization. These matches are usually televised. Thus, fans in countries across the world can observe the teams’ strategies for the main event. For instance, in 2015, a warm-up game between Team India and Australia in Adelaide was seen in India but not in Australia.
The ICC is supposed to announce the official schedule of play at the earliest, and most teams will be playing two warm-up games. The only one-off warm-up match for Team India is timed to take place against Ireland at Eisenhower Park, New York, on June 5. This will be followed by all the T20 World Cup group-stage matches.

Team India Departure and Preparation
The players on Rohit Sharma’s squad who are not participating in the IPL playoffs will depart on May 25. The remaining players will join on May 26, the day after the IPL final. With this simplified strategy, the players will travel less and have enough rest before their World Cup campaign.
