Taylor Fritz has played in three finals in 2024. The American won two of them. In February, he defeated fellow American Tommy Paul in straight sets to win and defend his Delray Beach Open title.
The American then played in the final of the Bavarian Championships in April, losing in straight sets to Jan-Lennard Struff. It was the first time Taylor Fritz had lost a final he had played in since the St. Petersburg Open final of 2021. He had won six consecutive finals since then.
The 2024 Eastbourne International title is Taylor Fritz’s third title on grass, all coming in the Eastbourne International tournament, having previously won the title in 2019 and 2022.
Double Fault Gifts Taylor Fritz The 1st Set
Taylor Fritz had a solid hold of serve in his first two service games, brushing off his Australian opponent without dropping a single point. In the fourth game of the first set, Max Purcell held Taylor Fritz to an 11-shot rally before the American successfully held his serve.
Purcell smelled blood in the ninth game of the set, chasing a break of Fritz’s serve. The Australian forced an error from Fritz to force the game to deuce after a rally that lasted 12 shots. In the end, it was Taylor Fritz who had the last laugh. The American was gifted a break of Purcell’s serve in the 10th game of the set with a double fault.
It was the first time Taylor Fritz was winning a set by a break of serve in the last five consecutive sets.
Fritz Holds On To 6th Game Break Of Serve
After a solid hold of serve in the first game of the second set, Fritz then chased the opportunity of a quick break of Purcell’s serve in the second game. After Fritz took a three-breakpoints lead on the Australian, the Australian then turned up the heat on his serves, forcing three errors from Fritz to bring the game to deuce. A 114-mph ace and a winner later, and Purcell held his serve.
Max Purcell eventually capitulated in the sixth game, getting his serve broken when he hit a volley long. The Australian failed to win a single point in that game. Taylor Fritz then consolidated his advantage with two aces in a perfect game of serves.
With Fritz set to serve for the championship in the ninth game of the set, the American raced to a 40-0 lead. Purcell forced the game to deuce, calling on two winners. This wasn’t enough, with a third Eastbourne International trophy just within Taylor Fritz’s reach. The American held his serve strongly to win the championship. He’s officially the record winner of the tournament, overtaking Feliciano Lopez.
