Tank Dell Looks To Breakout Against Minnesota Vikings

Houston Texans WR Tank Dell

The Houston Texans had three elite wide receivers going into the season. While that might still be the case, only Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs have seen substantial production. This might leave fans wondering when Tank Dell will ever get his breakout game. Well, there is a good chance it might come in week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The reason why Dell hasn’t had much production this season has nothing to do with his talent; it’s simply that Nico Collins has been soaking up all of his targets. Collins has a total of 18 targets in the first two weeks, whereas Dell only has 11. Off of those 18 targets, Collins leads the league in receiving yards and is positioning himself to be a top 5 wide receiver.

This makes it difficult for Tank Dell to see the ball since he has to compete with both Diggs and Collins to touch the football. One saving grace for Tank Dell has been running the end around, but the Texans only run that play once or twice per game. Otherwise, Dell needs the right play to get targeted by Quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Why Dell Is Poised For A Breakout Game

The offensive woes may stop in Week 3 for Tank Dell based on how the Vikings defense is constructed. The Vikings have two very strong corners, Byron Murphy Jr. and Stephon Gilmore. Going into the game, they might try to put immense pressure on Collins and Diggs with some heavy coverage.

They likely won’t be successful in stopping Collins or Diggs, but there should be many times when Stroud drops back to pass and finds his two big targets blanketed. On these plays, Tank Dell will most likely be lined up in the slot with a nickelback on him. He will see lots of slant routes where he can pick up easy yardage. There is also a chance that he might see more opportunities running the football. Typically, they only run the end around with him once or twice. It looks like Joe Mixon might not line up at running back, though, since he did not practice on Thursday.

The next man up at running back for the Texans would be Cam Akers, who can certainly take the workload of a full-time running back. The Texans coaching staff might try to mix things up, though, by getting Tank Dell the ball more on the ground. Either way, Tank Dell has proven himself to be a special player, and it may do the Texans lots of good to get him the ball more.
