Tampa Bay Buccaneers Surprising Loss To Broncos In Week 3

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came into Sunday’s matchup undefeated against the 0-2 Denver Broncos. The Bucs won 20-16 last week against an aggressive Detroit Lions. Baker Mayfield, quarterback for the Buccaneers, continued his connection to Bucs Receiver Chris Godwin, who finished seven receptions for 117 yards with one touchdown in the Lions game. However, the Bucs have had some injuries to key players on the team, especially on defense.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into week 3 with five players not playing against the Broncos: Defensive Linemen Calijah Kancey, who hasn’t started the season out with a calf injury, and Vita Vea, with a knee injury that he suffered during the Lions game, didn’t suit up. Bucs Safety Antoine Winfield Jr would miss the home game with a foot issue, and Offensive Lineman Luke Goedeke would be out for a second game with a concussion. Could the Bucs win a game without some of their key players on defense?

For a second week in a row, the offensive line allowed the defense to put Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield under pressure throughout the game. The Denver Broncos defense sacked Mayfield seven times and had nine hits on the Bucs quarterback. Broncos Linebacker Dondrea Tillman led the team with two sacks and three quarterback hits. The defense stopped the Buccaneers from completing two crucial fourth-down conversions. The Bucs offense never got on a roll to achieve scores to pressure the Broncos.

Speaking of pressure, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could not apply enough pressure on the Broncos offense, giving their rookie Quarterback Bo Nix plenty of time to make his reads and make positive decisions. The Broncos’ young quarterback threw for 216 yards, completing 25/36 of his passes. He went without throwing a touchdown but did score a rushing touchdown early in the first half of the game. Nix finished the game with nine carries for 47 yards.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offense Stalls

With another week of being under pressure, Mayfield just couldn’t get the offense to gel. In the past few weeks, Mayfield has made spectacular plays to get the Buccaneers in positions to win games. This week against the Broncos, Mayfield could only throw for 163 yards with 25/33 in completions, one touchdown, and one interception. Mayfield made it to his go-to guy receiver Chris Godwin. Godwin caught six passes for 53 yards for the Bucs’ only score of the day. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers star veteran Wide Receiver Mike Evans could only get open for two receptions for 17 yards.

For another week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers failed to gain over 100 yards in rushing. Bucs rookie Running Back Bucky Irving led in yards with nine carries for 70 yards and four receptions for 14 yards. Starting Running Back Rachaad White finished the day with six carries for 17 yards and five receptions for 18 yards but is suffering from a groin issue. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired OC Liam Coen to improve the run game, but it hasn’t panned out yet.

Final Thoughts

With this 26-7 loss at home to the Denver Broncos, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers must find a way to get their key players healthy. Their presence is missing on the field for the Bucs. It appears to be the same Buccaneers from last season, with the same issues and injuries piled on top of things. Maybe if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a healthy roster, things wouldn’t look as bad. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play a 2-1 Philadelphia Eagles team next week at home.
