Tampa Bay Buccaneers Add Payne Durham to Agonizing Injury List

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Payne Durham

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have high hopes of winning a fourth straight divisional title. However, to achieve this feat, the team must engage in championship preparation and ready itself for hardships that organically emerge. These organic hardships are already beginning to develop. The Buccaneers have had some players suffer some injuries, such as defensive player Ya Ya Diaby, who sustained a leg injury during practice on August 1, 2024, defensive lineman Calijah Kancey, who is battling a calf injury, and safety Jordan Whitehead, who is confronting a quad injury.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a list of injuries ranging from season-ending to day-to-day injuries during training camp. The team is adding another name to the injury list: tight end Payne Durham. Durham was injured during a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday. The Buccaneers are conducting tests to determine the severity of his injury.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Payne Durham from Purdue in 2023 in the fifth round. He played in 13 games last season and caught five receptions on seven targets for 58 yards. Playing as a backup to Cade Otton, Durham didn’t see too many snaps last season. With the new offensive schemes, the Buccaneers plan to use him more.

In the preseason 17-14 win against the Cincinnati Bengals last Saturday, Durham caught two receptions on two targets, totaling 27 yards. His status for Saturday’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is unknown. Since Coach Todd Bowles isn’t playing offensive starters until Week 3 of the preseason, it gives tight end Ko Keft and Devin Culp time to shine. Payne Durham is listed as day-to-day until health status is certain.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Making Adjustments

Two players are already on injured reserve: offensive tackle Silas Dzansi with a knee injury and offensive guard Sua Opeta with an ACL tear. The remaining Tampa Bay Buccaneers players on the injury list are considered questionable, which leads one to believe they will be on the field when available. This raises serious questions about whether certain players will be ready when kickoff arrives. Whether old or new schemes, players need to benefit from the necessary repetitions to make the goal of championships real and to eliminate flaws in their execution.

These injuries give backups time to display their talent and supply them with essential repetitions. It’s better to find a diamond in the rough in preseason rather than in the middle of the season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers still have time to make needed moves to secure their depth into the playoffs, but it will not happen in August or September. There are still two more preseason games and a whole regular season to deal with. Hopefully, the remaining Tampa Bay Buccaneers will stay healthy, and the ones injured will stay healthy after recovery.
