Tampa Bay Buccaneers Release Absentee Randy Gregory

The ship never sailed when it came to Randy Gregory with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs were hoping to add some veteran depth to their defense. In this attempt to add some more pass rush pressure to the defense after last season not being too successful. After releasing outside linebacker Shaq Barrett, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a vacancy to fill in their defense, but the ball never got rolling.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to part ways with defensive end Randy Gregory according to ESPN. The Bucs acquired Gregory during the offseason in April and was going to be part of the outside linebacker roster. Gregory never reported to training camp on July 23rd and has missed two preseason games. Gregory has been fined the whole time for not reporting. According to Greg Auman on X, Randy Gregory has been fined totaling over 8ook already.

Randy Gregory was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round in 2015. He would be signed by the Denver Broncos in 2022 and how he ended up signed to the Bucs is a story all in itself. Gregory has a career 85 tackles, 22 sacks, and 69 quarterback hits. The reason for Gregory not showing up for the Buccaneers is still unknown. When coach Todd Bowles was asked about it Sunday, he had this to say according to the teams’ website,

“I’ll never find out but I wish him the best, and we’ll move on from there. You can’t miss what you never had.”

Gregory sued the NFL and Denver Broncos for fines totaling 500,00 over THC use claiming to be therapeutic. We will have to see how things will fall out for Gregory but for now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a season to deal with. When it comes to the outside linebacker position Coach Bowles has good feelings about the personnel the team has.

Coach Todd Bowles Is Happy with OLB Personnel

This past offseason the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made other moves to solidify the outside linebacker spot, with the addition that Gregory was going to play. The Bucs drafted Chris Braswell from Alabama in the 2nd round of this year’s draft. While at Alabama Braswell had 75 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, and four fumbles’ forces during his three seasons there. During the Buccaneer’s training camp recently, Braswell impressed Coach Bowles and had this to say according to reporter Scott Smith,

“Braswell’s been excellent since he’s come on with Joe and Yaya having been down. The experience and the leaps and bounds by which he gets better every day, he’s been one of the more pleasant surprises here since we’ve been up here in Jacksonville. He keeps getting better and better. I love the things he’s doing, love where he’s at.”

In the loss Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars Braswell only had 3 tackles with one solo. The player that shined the most was Jose Ramirez who took down the quarterback three times during the preseason game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers applied a better pass rush than they did the week before against the Cincinnati Bengals. Even without Randy Gregory Coach Bowles is confident in the squad he has in the outside linebacker spot. So much so that he conveyed his thoughts on the team’s website,

“The outside linebacker position on defense probably has the most depth of any position over there. So we’re very comfortable with the guys we have that are playing and that’s backing them up right now, and guys that could possibly make the team.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Final Stretch of Preparation

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one more preseason game against the Miami Dolphins this Saturday. Most of the starting players are planned to hit the field. Some players like Yaya Diaby will not suit up but are set to play the opening kick-off against the Commanders. With that being said it should give players like Chris Braswell and Jose Ramirez extra reps to show off their skills.

If they continue to amaze Coach Bowles and staff, we could see them during the season making plays. As it gets closer to the season teams will be tightening things up on the roster. Only time will tell if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the right players to have a successful season.
