The Detroit Pistons broke their losing streak last night against the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Center. Now, the Sixers are 1-3 through four games. This loss was unexpected after a good team performance against the Indiana Pacers. So, what were the major takeaways from this game?
Game Recap: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Detroit Pistons
The Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Detroit Pistons by 10 points 105-95. In the first quarter, the Sixers were dominant on the floor. Yet, the team couldn’t maintain the lead. Interestingly, the Pistons decided the game’s outcome after a crushing second half performance.
The first half ended 54-45 with the Detroit Pistons ahead. The Pistons dominated throughout the game. Also, the Sixers didn’t have a chance to equal or turn the game around. Thus, another loss without the Philadelphia 76ers star duo of Paul George and Joel Embiid.
Tyrese Maxey finished with 32 points, seven assists, two steals, and three rebounds as the team’s top player. Jaden Ivey finished with 23 points, three assists, three rebounds, and two steals, while Cade Cunningham finished with 22 points, seven assists, five rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Major Takeaways From This Game
The Philadelphia 76ers will continue to struggle without Joel Embiid or Paul George on the floor. Most of the players signed during the 2024 offseason were mainly supporting players built around Embiid. Unfortunately, these supporting characters are playing the main player roles. That’s why the team has a slow start this season. The Detroit Pistons had more rebounds than the Philadelphia 76ers. Tobias Harris had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Also, the Pistons had more offensive rebounds than the Sixers which amplified their offensive run.
The Philadelphia 76ers offense struggled to maintain its footing. Since the season started, the Sixers have been the league’s worst three-point shooting team. This is because the team’s main three-point stars were out of the game. Also, the offensive burden on Maxey is heavy. The Pistons dominated the Sixers from deep, making 41.7% of their shots. While the Sixers shot 8-of-28 from downtown.
Jared McCain performed well with the few minutes he had on the court. Off the bench, he had 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists in 22 minutes. Also, this performance made him the third-best player on the floor. Since the offensive burden is heavy on Maxey, McCain should get more minutes with Maxey on the court.
Guerschon Yabusele, as a backup five, didn’t seem to work against the Pistons. Yet, Yabusele’s performance was efficient off the bench. He had eight points, two assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block. Also, the Frenchman made 3-of-4 shots from the field and 2-of-3 from downtown in 19 minutes. With this performance, Yabusele would play better as a power forward. This could lead Head Coach Nick Coach Nurse to start using Adem Bona on the court.
Final Thoughts
Joel Embiid and Paul George should be ready to play soon for the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, it’s clear the team struggles without Embiid and George in the rotation. On the other hand, Bona could get more minutes on the court to gauge how much he has improved. This will help reduce the burden on Andre Drummond and move Yabusele to the power forward position.
