Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 World Cup Victory-Claiming Catch Was Genuine

Following South African legend Shaun Pollock’s take on the controversial catch in the T20 World Cup Final, new developments have taken place. A different footage has emerged about Suryakumar Yadav’s marvelous T20 World Cup-winning catch, which finally ended all debates.

Ian Smith called it one of the best catches he had ever seen, but there were questions over Suryakumar Yadav’s match-turning grab in the T20 World Cup final. A couple of videos flooded social media, asking if it was a legal catch. But the most recent video has brought all that to rest. There is no doubt that this stunning catch shifted the momentum of victory towards India.

Game-Changing Moment

South Africa needed 25 runs from 25 balls, and with a win predictor giving India only a 20% chance, South Africa had the maximum chance of winning. Jasprit Bumrah’s miserly overs, combined with Hardik Pandya sending Heinrich Klaasen on his way, helped bring the game back into balance.

However, with David Miller at the crease and 16 runs needed from the final over, it was still anyone’s game. On the first ball of the final over from Hardik Pandya, David Miller aimed for a six on what was a low and wide full toss, but it appeared destined for the boundary. And then Suryakuma Yadav made a stunning catch.

It was here that SKY stepped in at the boundary, catching a stunning catch and winning India the game by seven runs. The catch was highly regarded by cricket fans and quickly went viral. Some people compared their catch with Kapil Dev’s 1983 iconic catch to dismiss Viv Richards. But the slow motion of Suryakumar’s Yadav dismissal that BCCI shared on Twitter showed him landing with his shoe touching the boundary cushion, raising doubts about the catch.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Recollection

Meanwhile, a fresh video shot by a fan in the stadium proved that Suryakumar Yadav never made contact with the boundary cushion. Now it is clear that he has no contact with the boundary. And David Miller is legally out. He does not fickle the boundary cushion.

Suryakumar Yadav explained that if Rohit Sharma stands closer to me, then I will throw the ball towards Rohit Sharma. But he is not closer to me. That’s why I throw the ball in the air, then cross the boundary, and then again catch it. It happens within 4 to 5 seconds. But that was God’s gift at that moment.

Talking about the catch with Indian Express, Suryakumar narrated how he felt at that moment.

Suryakumar Yadav narrated:

Rohit Sharma usually never stands at long-on but that day he was standing there. Therefore, when the ball was coming, for one second I saw him and he looked at me. I ran to catch the ball. Had he [Rohit] been closer, I would have thrown the ball towards him. But he was nowhere close. Whatever happened during those four to five seconds, I can’t describe it.

The fresh video has confirmed Suryakumar Yadav’s catch as a clean one, no longer sparking any controversy around it but rather inscribing the legacy of this particular cricketing moment among the best catches ever.
