Summer League Spotlight: The Best Players From July 7, 2024

The second day of Summer League action is officially over. It was another four games of lopsided California Classic play as some dominated the court and others struggled to get things going. With court domination came some players who had some fantastic moments. They played with some hustle and got the job done.

Obviously, basketball is a team sport, but there are some players who led the charge of bringing their team the win.

Today’s top performance is going to rookie Kel’el Ware. His first game on July 6th was a tough one, but he turned things around in yesterday’s game against Sacramento Kings 2. Ware was playing with some intensity under the basket and looked as he should. He was drafted 15th overall and showed why during the game. With a spring in his step, he slammed the ball down for some nice dunks.

Ware finished his second Summer League game with 26 points, three assists, 11 rebounds, and one block. It looks like Miami can sit back now and be happy with how their draft prospect performed. Perhaps he just needed to shake off the first-game jitters. If the rookie center can play like this in an NBA game, he’ll have a great road ahead of him.

The Rest of The Best

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors improved to 2-0 in the California Classic thanks to a great win over the Los Angeles Lakers. The charge was led by Ethan Thompson, who received a shout-out in the last Spotlight. As predicted, Thompson got his shot in the starting lineup, and he did not disappoint. The guard was the shining star of the night, and no one was close to having a better performance in that game.

Thompson had an 8-14 shooting night and went 2-5 from three. He also was 4-4 from the line. These shots all accumulated to a solid 22 points. Thompson also finished the night with 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The 25-year-old showed off his experience against the Lakers and put on a great show.

Charlotte Hornets

Like GSW, the Hornets also improved to 2-0 for their Summer League start. All of these players look like they’re running smoothly under coach Charles Lee. Unfortunately, yesterday’s best, Mouhamadou Gueye had to be taken off the floor early. However, they still snatched the win thanks to Bryce McGowens.

McGowens had the most points by far, with 20. He also contributed a steal, two rebounds, and three assists. He and his teammates played locked-in defense, swarming Team China, leading to multiple players having nice steals. This guard played 25 minutes of fully productive basketball, which is a great thing to see.

Sacramento Kings 1

The pattern continues down the list as this next team also improved to 2-0. If you look at the box score, this one was much more of a team effort than the rest. However, one standout was the undrafted Boogie Ellis. The USC guard had a great senior year, averaging 16.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. His first Summer League game only saw him having eight points, but he improved greatly in the next one.

Ellis had a 17-point night off the bench, which included a steal, an assist, and two rebounds. He was 6-10 from the field and made 3-6 of his three-pointers. Hopefully, Ellis can have some more great nights that can help him get a G League contract or perhaps even a shot at the league. He’s too good of a player not to get the chance.
