Sugar Bowl Postponed 24 Hours Due To New Year’s Eve Attack

Sugar Bowl

The Sugar Bowl has been postponed 24 hours due to a terrorist attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Year’s Eve. At least 15 people were killed last night in New Orleans when the suspect drove his vehicle around barricades and into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street. The Sugar Bowl was set to be played tonight at 8:45 P.M., but new information caused that decision to change.

Earlier today two IEDs were found to be viable in the suspect’s vehicle. Law enforcement officials were looking for more such devices around the French Quarter. The FBI just held a press conference and said they do not believe the suspect was “solely responsible” for yesterday’s attack. As various law enforcement agencies continued to investigate, the Sugar Bowl was pushed back as a precautionary measure.

Sugar Bowl Features a Marquee Matchup

In times like this, the College Football Playoff should take a backseat, but a game is slated to be played in little more than 24 hours. No. 7 Notre Dame will take on No. 2 Georgia in the CFP Quarterfinals. These are two of the best programs in college football history. Before the New Year’s Eye suspected terrorism attack, this was set to be one of the best games in CFP history. With the events of the last 24 hours in New Orleans, the game will take on a more somber tone whenever it is played.

Final Thoughts

The events from yesterday will impact both teams in the Sugar Bowl both on and off the field. According to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge, Georgia is sheltering in place at the team hotel as they await further instruction. Both teams must attempt to prepare for a consequential Sugar Bowl that will be played soon. For all parties involved, law enforcement must do everything in their power to ensure all of the residents of New Orleans are protected and the Sugar Bowl can go off without a hitch once deemed safe to play.
