Stuttgart Open: Bublik And Tiafoe Triumph In 2nd Round Clashes

After Lorenzo Musetti’s fiery Stuttgart Open second-round clash with Dominik Koepfer, Frances Tiafoe faced off with Yannick Hanfmann while Hamid Medjedovic faced off with Alexander Bublik.

The 4th seed, Frances Tiafoe, is the defending champion after defeating Jan-Lennard Struff in the 2023 final. Yannick Hanfmann defeated fellow German, Henri Squire, in the first round of the Stuttgart Open, qualifying him to face Tiafoe.

Hamid Medjedovic came from a set down in his first-round clash with Fábián Marozsán to win and set up his clash with Bublik. Tiafoe and Bublik got byes to the second round. Jack Draper overcame Sebastian Ofner to face Marcos Giron, who defeated Andy Murray in the first round.

Tiafoe Starts Title-Defense With Win

Frances Tiafoe’s Stuttgart Open title defense started with a tough opening set. Both players were very evenly matched in the first set. Yannick Hanfmann won seven points from aces, securing 21 points on his first serve, one less than Tiafoe won.

Tiafoe saved all eight break points he faced from Hanfmann on his serve, winning four points at the net. Hanfmann dominated him with 20 winners but his single breakpoint gave him the set 7-5.

Tiafoe scored 10 points from aces to Hanfmann’s three in the second set. Hanfmann dominated the set at the net with 11 points to Tiafoe’s seven. However, Tiafoe won 18 winners, one more than Hanfmann’s. The set climaxed in a tiebreak which Tiafoe won.

Bublik Wins Stuttgart Open Clash

ATP ranked No. 17 Alexander Bublik is at the highest point of his career. In 2024, he played in two finals: the Open Sud de France and the Dubai Tennis Championships. Bublik won the Open Sud de France after defeating Borna Coric in the final.

Alexander Bublik’s second-round Stuttgart Open clash with Hamid Medjedovic started with five aces in the first set. He won 16 of the 17 sets contested on his first serve. He also saved the only breakpoint he faced, breaking Medjedovic’s serve twice in five tries.

The second set was more closely fought after a 6-1 first-set Stuttgart Open win. Medjedovic scored 12 points on aces, one less than Bublik scored. Medjedovic scored more net points and winners but faltered on unforced errors. Bublik eventually overcame the Serbian in a tiebreak.

Draper Defeats Giron In 3 Sets 

After Marcos Giron’s first-round Stuttgart Open victory over Andy Murray, he faced off with Jack Draper in a first set that was as fiery as expected. Both fighters hit three aces past each other, but Draper scored seven more points than Giron on his first serve. Draper also won seven points at the net together with 13 winners.

Giron flipped the script in their Stuttgart Open second-set clash. Both players hit three aces again but Draper burned himself with three double faults. Giron dominated him in first and second serves en route to a 4-6, 6-3 equalizer.

Draper’s resilience paid off in the third set. He dominated his first serves, and collected vital points off the American’s first and second serves, including an all-important breakpoint. Draper also dominated the set at the net with 10 points to Giron’s four. Draper ended up winning the Stuttgart Open clash 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Hamid Medjedovic played his first Masters 1000 tournament at the 2024 Madrid Open. Jack Draper played one final in 2024, the Adelaide International, which he lost to Jirí Lehecka. Alexander Bublik will face Ugo Humbert in the quarterfinals.
