Steven Bergwijn has responded to Dutch coach Ronald Koeman’s criticism of his move to Saudi. The 26-year-old former Ajax and Tottenham star was very unpleased with the way Koeman reacted to his decision. This in return prompted a harsh response from the young man.
Steven Bergwijn had secured a move to a Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad for the remaining part of his footballing career. The move had prompted the Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman to ignore his name from the list of players called up for the Nations League games. And it didn’t stop there. Koeman also reacted bluntly about causing a rift between the two and Bergwijn has responded.

Koeman came out bluntly saying he would not pick the 26-year-old forward who made a transfer move of £17.7m move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad from Ajax.
The Netherlands coach felt that Bergwijn’s move was fueled by his desire to earn more, rather than improve his career. This stirred up the former Everton and Southampton boss to say: “The book is closed to him. He knows what I think about this.”
Meanwhile, Bergwijn didn’t like Koeman’s reaction to his move to Al Ittihad and said he and the coach hadn’t talked about it. He said: “I don’t even want to play under Koeman anymore, I won’t play for someone who portrays me like he has done in the media. He could have called me and heard my side of the story. How can he say such things without talking to me?”
Bergwijn Continued Response
Bergwijn speaking to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, continued saying: “If he had been a committed national coach, he would have called me first. Now I had to hear about it on TV. I’ve had many beautiful moments with him, so this is far too easy and I’m disappointed with him.”
However, Koeman was asked about Bergwijn’s comments and the Dutchman said it is “logical” that the 26-year-old would respond and they “will not discuss it further”.
Koeman now further added: “It does not affect me at all. I only said that this step does not show sporting ambition. I did not say much more.”
Koeman granted the Bergwijn his first international appearance in 2018 during his first coaching spell for the Oranje. And so far the 26-year-old who is a PSV Eindhoven academy product has provided eight goals in 35 appearances for his country.
Bergwijn on Koeman and Brobbey
Koeman who coached the Barcelona team for a short while returned as the coach of the Netherlands. In that period he had criticized Ajax forward Brian Brobbey’s technicality on the pitch. Bergwijn responded to it by saying: “He had previously publicly expressed an opinion about Brobbey, which was also not nice and which he later said was not smart,” Bergwijn continued: “That is not how you treat your own players. If he continues like this, he will lose all his credibility.”
