Steelers will go against the Denver Broncos this coming Sunday, but for all the fans who were looking forward to a Russell Wilson revenge game, well, they will somewhat be disappointed. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced the starting quarterback in Justin Fields, keeping Wilson on the bench for the second straight week. This set up an interesting dynamic between the two teams going into Week 2 of the NFL season.
Announcement of Change at Quarterback
News from the Pittsburgh quarterback situation has been rumored, at least, with the most recent update by Coach Mike Tomlin. While injured Russell Wilson, suffering from calf tightness that eventually kept him out of Week 1, was to be thought of making a return this week, Tomlin has instead opted to go with Justin Fields for the matchup. Wilson missed the season-opening game against Atlanta and is much better, but that does not mean he will make the expected return against his former team.
Russell Wilson’s revenge game against the Denver Broncos was huge, finally getting his shot back. He left town dramatically after a tough, bench-filled season. After the Broncos decided to release him and the Steelers picked him up, this became one hugely anticipated matchup. But for now, that storyline with Wilson still on the sidelines will have to wait.
Justin Fields starts once again after his Week 1 start against the Atlanta Falcons. He had an OK game in the air, completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards without a touchdown, and adding on the ground 57 yards running on 14 carries with a fumble. He should be able to run the ball and manage the game decently for the Steelers.
It is a big game for the Denver Broncos with it being the home opener. The Broncos surely do not want to start 0-2 for the second straight season, and the Steelers are not exactly who they want to see fresh off a Week 1 road win at Atlanta. Denver needs to come out hot and take advantage of its home field.
Steelers’ Recent Performance
The Steelers went on the road and defeated the Falcons in their season opener. With a great defensive performance, with the main factor being the ability to control the game, a win was captured. To move into the next week of action, the Steelers look to keep their momentum going with quarterback Justin Fields.
It all comes down to the Broncos’ defense. They’ve seen Fields this past year, and they will be looking for that excellent second half from last year to repeat itself. They’ll need to pressure Fields and take him out of rhythm if the Denver ‘D’ wants this first win. This game sees both the Steelers and Broncos with different challenges and goals as they take to the gridiron. For Pittsburgh, it’s a question of continuing to win with Fields at the helm, and that will be the focus. For Denver, it is a question of just rebounding from a rough start and coming out big in the home opener.
All told, even though the revenge game of Russell Wilson against the Broncos will not take place this Sunday, this is a pretty big matchup between the Steelers and the Broncos. The Steelers will get Justin Fields starting, and he’ll be under the microscope as he tries to build upon a pretty solid first outing. As for the Denver Broncos, it is an opportunity to rescue their season with an important victory. It is expected to be an exciting game that has a lot on the line for both teams.
