St. Louis Cardinals Parting Ways with Paul Goldschmidt After 2024 Season

Paul Goldschmidt, St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have been eliminated from playoff contention and have a lot of question marks surrounding their future. One staple who could be gone next season is seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

St. Louis Cardinals not keeping Paul Goldschmidt

Katie Woo of The Athletic is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals do not intend to sign first baseman Paul Goldschmidt during the offseason, as he is a free agent. He signed a five-year, $130 million contract and that deal is set to expire and he is likely going to find a new home after spending the last six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. He struggled throughout the 2024 season as he has career lows in batting average (.245), slugging percentage (.412), and OPS (.713).

At 37 years old, he is going to be in a good spot to sign with a contending team for a two-year deal with the second year being a player option, as the first base position is not seen as too valuable in this day in age. With free agents like Pete Alonso, Anthony Rizzo (team option for $17.0 million), and Josh Bell to name a few, there could be some movement with impactful players this offseason.

For the St. Louis Cardinals, this is going to be a chance to reset a bit. They still have the Nolan Arenado contract on their books until the 2028 season and could be a trade candidate as the team is hitting the reset button. With contracts like pitcher Sonny Gray, reliever Ryan Helsley, and catcher Willson Contreras still on the books and expected to take a significant portion of the payroll as well, this is something that could be an active offseason for the St. Louis Cardinals to shed payroll.

What has Paul Goldschmidt said about his 2024 season?

Paul Goldschmidt has been one of the most vocal about his less-than-expected performance this season. He spoke to the assembled media last week and was not happy with how he played this season.

“This is probably the worst I’ve performed on the field in my career. That was disappointing, a good bit of that burden was on me. If I could’ve played how I believe I’m capable of playing, we could’ve won more games and maybe this might have turned out differently.” h/t NY Times

It will be interesting to see how Paul Goldschmidt plays next season and which teams are interested in adding him as a free agent.
