St. Louis Cardinals Shockingly Miss 2024 MLB Playoffs

The St. Louis Cardinals missed the 2024 MLB Playoffs.

With a 5-1 loss last night at home against the Cleveland Guardians, the St. Louis Cardinals were officially eliminated from postseason contention. After making the MLB Playoffs for four straight seasons(2019-2022), the Cardinals will be watching postseason baseball at home for the second consecutive season. St. Louis has been a middling ballclub all season and was never able to find their footing in a competitive National League playoff picture.

The St. Louis Cardinals started off slowly winning only 16 of their first 40 games this season and faced an uphill battle to get their regular season back on track. Will the Cardinals be able to finish off the regular season well and how will their front office respond to another season where they failed to make the postseason?

St. Louis Cardinals Season Summary

St. Louis(77-77) is in third place in the National League Central and eight games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. The offense of the St. Louis Cardinals has been poor this season. They are 13th in batting average, 23rd in home runs, and 25th in runs scored. Their offense is paced by Left Fielder Brendan Donovan and Right Fielder Alec Burleson. Donovan leads the ballclub in batting average while Burleson leads the team in home runs and RBI.

The St. Louis pitching staff has also been poor this season. They are 16th in ERA, 26th in strikeouts, and 23rd in opposing batting average. Their pitching staff is led by Starting Pitcher Sonny Gray. He is 14th in the league in wins, seventh in strikeouts, and 14th in WHIP. Closer Ryan Helsley is second in the league with 45 saves and Relief Pitcher Andrew Kittredge is second in the league with 34 holds. As the aforementioned statistics indicate, the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen has been one of their strengths this season. They are sixth in the league with a 3.61 bullpen ERA according to Covers.com.

Team’s Upcoming Schedule

The St. Louis Cardinals play the middle game of their three-game set against the Cleveland Guardians this evening. Following the conclusion of their series with the Guardians, St. Louis closes out their 2024 regular season with two road series against the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants.

Even though 2024 did not go the way the team or its fans expected, this proud franchise will go back to the drawing board and build toward what they hope will be a successful 2025 season. The team will face an offseason full of questions as they analyze what led to such a disappointing 2024 regular season.
