St. Louis Cardinals 14-Year Veteran Comes Through Late Over Struggling Chicago Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers continue dominating the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs

The St. Louis Cardinals had a late comeback Saturday night against the Chicago Cubs. Veteran lefty Matt Carpenter tied the game in the Redbirds four-run eighth inning. Brenden Donovan hit a two-run single in the hole on the left side to give the Cardinals the lead. The comeback victory gives St. Louis their ninth win in their last eleven games.

Jameson Taillon started for the Chicago Cubs and made it into the sixth inning and allowed three runs. The biggest leak for the Chicago pitching staff came in the eighth inning from an unlikely source. Mark Leiter Jr. entered the game with a sub 1.00 ERA but gave up four runs on four singles and surrendered the 4-3 Chicago lead.

Miles Mikolas and Jameson Taillon took the mound on Saturday night for a prime-time rivalry game in St. Louis. The two veteran right-handers matched each other in the first battle of the season between the NL Central rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

Miles Mikolas went six innings, let up three runs, four hits, two walks, and struck out six on 82 pitches. His outing was excellent, with the exception of the fourth inning when he gave up all three of his runs.

Jameson Taillon labored through his day but kept the Cardinals lineup under control for 5 2/3 innings. Taillon needed 105 pitches and surrendered nine hits but left the ball game with only three runs on the scoreboard. The 32-year-old right-hander left after he allowed his third and tying run of the game.

Luke Little got the final out of the sixth inning and the first game of the season series was tied at 3-3 after 6. In the top of the seventh, the Cubs took advantage of a Paul Goldschmidt error, and on a Patrick Wisdom double, Michael Busch made it across the dish to give the Cubs their second lead of the game.

With two runners in scoring position, Chicago had a chance to widen the margin but Miguel Amaya and Mike Tauchman were unable to push across any more runs. The Cubs could’ve used more support because the bottom of the eighth would be the biggest moment of the game, with the Cardinals jumping on one of the best relievers in the division.

Mark Leiter Jr. was tasked with holding the lead until the ninth inning. The floodgates of the hot St. Louis Cardinals lineup opened up on him, however, and after almost stranding a pair of lead-off singles, it was a familiar veteran who tied the game.

Matt Carpenter pinch-hit for Michael Siani and lifted a single just out of the outstretched grasp of Nico Hoerner. Seiya Suzuki came up firing to home, but between the throw on the first base side of the plate and the transfer for Miguel Amaya from catch-to-tag, Alec Burleson came in to score.

After Carpenter tied the game 4-4 and was lifted for a pinch-runner, Dylan Carlson, Brenden Donovan gave the St. Louis Cardinals the lead on a single. The substitutions in the eighth paid off as Carlson wheeled around third to give the Cardinals a two-run lead. Leiter Jr. had given up two earned runs in the entire year, but when Donovan came in to score later in the inning, the Cubs bullpen arm would be charged with four earned on Saturday night.

The 7-4 lead the Cardinals took into the ninth wasn’t as secure as Oliver Marmol would like. Ryan Helsley came in and like Leiter Jr. surrendered four hits, two to lead off the inning. The difference is Helsley stopped the bleeding just in time. Two runs came in to score in the ninth and the tying run was stranded at third when Christopher Morel grounded out to end the game and give St. Louis the first decision in the series after Friday night’s rain-out.
