Erick Fedde Traded to St. Louis Cardinals in Massive 3-Way Trade

Erick Fedde, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a three-team trade that includes right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde going to the Cardinals and Tommy Edman being moved to the Dodgers. This deal is going to have a ripple effect, specifically in the National League, so let’s take a closer look at all of the details surrounding this three-team trade and what it means going forward for each team.

What did the St. Louis Cardinals get?

Erick Fedde is joining a veteran-laded starting pitching rotation for the St. Louis Cardinals and will likely replace Andre Pallante in the rotation, as things stand right now. Currently, the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting rotation before this move looked this way:

  1. Sonny Gray
  2. Miles Mikolas
  3. Andre Pallante
  4. Lance Lynn
  5. Kyle Gibson

This could mean another starting pitcher is going to be on the move but could also see a starting pitcher head to the bullpen. Fedde on the season has started 21 games and is 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 121.2 innings. He is no stranger to the National League but is also getting close to surpassing his career-high in innings (133.1 in 2021). It will be interesting to see what that entails going forward with his workload. Fedde is in the first year of a two-year, $15 million deal so he will be under contract for the 2025 season as well for the Cards.

In addition, a familiar face will also be added to the trade as infielder/outfielder Tommy Pham will also come over in the deal. Pham spent 2014-2018 with the St, Louis Cardinals so this is a bit of a return home for him. He has hit at an okay level this year as in 70 games, he has a .266/.330/.380 slash line with five home runs and 19 RBIs. However, he is not producing well and will look to get back to the form he had as a member of the Cardinals earlier in his career.

What did the Los Angeles Dodgers get?

Infielder Tommy Edman has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers but has yet to play in the majors this season after suffering a right wrist injury in Spring Training with the St. Louis Cardinals He is currently on a rehab assignment and is struggling at the plate as he has a .535 OPS in 29 at-bats in Double-A right now. Edman has shown positional flexibility as he has played all three spots in the outfield, second base, third base and shortstop throughout his career. Edman also has one more season under contract and will be paid $9.5 million next season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the 2025 offseason.

This helps the Dodgers get another player who can play anywhere and be a solid defender while contributing toward the bottom of the lineup. However, he is not the only player included as the Dodgers also will get pitcher Michael Kopech, who has been a decent reliever as the 28-year-old righty has a 4.74 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP in 43.2 innings this year. However, his 59 strikeouts are definitely impressive and adds another arm to the Dodgers’ bullpen.

What did the Chicago White Sox get?

Four players have been named in the deal heading to the Chicago White Sox as the Dodgers are sending infielder Miguel Vargas and prospects Jeral Perez, Noah Miller and Alexander Albertus. We are not going to know much about them until they get called up but Miguel Vargas will likely be in the majors right away for them as all four players are infielders.
