Sri Lanka Complains to ICC Over ‘Different Treatment’ at World Cup 2024

Sri Lanka complains to ICC over 'different treatment' at World Cup

On Friday Sri Lanka submitted a complaint to the ICC regarding how their team has been managed during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Their main concerns were about the matches being played in the US and the West Indies.

Sri Lanka, along with the Netherlands, are the only teams slated to play their first-round matches at four separate locations. New York, Dallas, Florida, and St Lucia. However, they are not happy with how things have been made tough for them.

Even after their warm-up match against Ireland, they were held at a Florida airport for seven hours. Sri Lanka had to reschedule a training session in New York due to a delayed flight.

Sri Lanka Sports Minister Pointed Out The Issues

Sri Lanka’s sports minister, Harin Fernando, stated, “Our squad filed an official protest after having to wait for seven hours at the Florida airport.” He requested the ICC for an explanation.

Sri Lanka’s Cricket has registered a complaint to the ICC,” Fernando told parliamentarians on Friday. “Various countries are dealt with differentially.” We were looking for clarification from the situation’s management.”

He further stated that when the Sri Lankan squad arrived in New York, they were provided accommodations more than 90 minutes away from the practice stadium. Although the Indian team was accommodated more closely.

Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by six wickets in their first encounter in New York on Monday. “Sri Lanka Cricket is upset with the ICC,” Fernando informed parliament. “Different countries are treated differently.” We have requested an explanation from the event administrators.”

Sajith Premadasa, the speaker of the opposition in Sri Lanka’s legislature, decided that everyone in the house appreciates the team. He seems very disappointed with how they have been managed. Sri Lanka’s first T20 World Cup match was against South Africa in New York.

Impact On Sri Lanka’s Performance

Mahesh Theekshana, the Islanders’ spinner, commented after the match and criticized the ICC for providing them with an unequal arrangement.

“It is injustice. We had to be patient for our return flight from Florida, to Miami, for around eight hours in the departure lounge. And we came back. We were scheduled to depart at 8 p.m. but got our flight at 5 a.m. It’s somewhat unjust to us, but it has no impact when you perform.

In the end, He also said, “It’s extremely unjust for us, we have to go home each day because we have performances [at] four distinct locations.”.

Angelo Mathews, a former captain and currently a part of Sri Lanka’s T20 team, characterized the last few days as “most challenging” in an interview with local network Ada Derana TV.

“The practice conditions are not good. The wickets aren’t good. “The past four to five days have been extremely difficult for us,” he explained. “We had to cancel practices due to a travel delay. We will not use this as an excuse; we are a squad that has overcome hurdles. We want to put all of this behind us and perform well in the upcoming encounter.”

Sri Lanka’s second group match is on Saturday against Asian neighbors Bangladesh.
