NBA free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie last played for the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, Dinwiddie has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources told The Athletic and Stadium. The 31-year-old will reunite with the Mavericks as an arguably ideal backcourt fit after averaging 17.4 points in parts of two Mavericks seasons.
Dinwiddie was a key part of the Mavericks’ 2022 Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors. Dinwiddie’s 26 points, four assists, and two blocks propelled him to the national spotlight, despite the Mavericks’ 120-110 loss to the Warriors in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals at the Chase Center. Dinwiddie first arrived in Dallas, Texas, as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal at the 2022 NBA trade deadline and was sent to Brooklyn, New York, a year later as part of the Kyrie Irving trade. Read on for further information on Dinwiddie’s second stint in Dallas.
Spencer Dinwiddie’s Most Recent Season
Spencer Dinwiddie played for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023-24 NBA season. Dinwiddie signed a one-year deal with the league minimum with the Lakers. Dinwiddie scored a team-high 26 points, along with two rebounds and five assists, in the Lakers’ 150-145 win over the Indiana Pacers on March 24, 2024.
Dinwiddie averaged 10.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and a 39.2% field goal percentage after the 2023-24 NBA season. Dinwiddie’s multifaceted mindset, along with ample aggressiveness, has appeared to help him become an arguably accommodating NBA player.
However, Dinwiddie and the Lakers’ 2024 NBA postseason run ended in a fast first-round exit. The Lakers dropped a 108-105 decision to the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference First Round series. Denver won the series vs. Los Angeles in five games.
Spencer Dinwiddie’s Return to Dallas
Spencer Dinwiddie has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources told ESPN. Dinwiddie, 31, played a key role as the Mavericks’ sixth man on the 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals team. He considered re-signing with the Mavericks after receiving a buyout but opted to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2024. Dinwiddie’s signing arguably happened at the right time as the Mavericks were reportedly limited to offering the veterans minimum. Dinwiddie will likely satisfy the Mavericks’ need for another scorer and ball handler in their rotation to complement their superstar duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Spencer Dinwiddie’s Impact in Dallas
Spencer Dinwiddie will return to Dallas, Texas, for the second time in his NBA career. Dinwiddie will also reunite with Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, whom he helped lead to the 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals. Both Dinwiddie and Doncic contributed to the Mavericks’ deep postseason run in 2022.
Dinwiddie could be described as a journeyman guard, depending on who you ask, but he played some of his best basketball with the Mavericks. The Los Angeles, California-born 31-year-old veteran guard averaged 17.1 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, and shot 46.6% from the field and 40.4% from the three-point line. Dinwiddie’s success with the Dallas Mavericks can continue shortly.
Dinwiddie had a successful first stint in Dallas and given his previous seamless fit in his first rodeo in Dallas, he’ll probably be an ideal fit in his second stint. He’ll likely stay in the backcourt to feed off passes from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Only time will tell how the return turns out to be, whether it will be impactful or be a dull ride.
