South Africa Makes a Clean Sweep Against the West Indies, Claims Series 2-0

South Africa defeated the West Indies by 40 runs in the second Test match at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday. The Proteas won the two-match series against the Windies for the 10th time in a row, continuing their 25-year streak.  Furthermore, the victory allowed the visitors to gain valuable points in the World Test Championship 2023-25.

The pitch had been bowler-friendly, with 17 wickets falling on the opening day of the second Test. Meanwhile, the track improved slightly on the second day, with only eight wickets falling. The Proteas opened up a 24-run advantage after the hosts were knocked out for 144 in the first innings.  As the game went on, the surface became more settled, allowing the hitters to take their shots.

South Africa Seals Victory

South African openers Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi put up 79 runs off 126 deliveries, The, latter was removed by Jayden Seales in the second innings. Although the following five wickets went for only 60 runs, Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder held the ship together. Both faced 136 balls and reached the stumps, extending South Africa’s lead to 236 runs.

However, the Windies bowlers came out firing on the third day, claiming the final five wickets for 23 in 10.4 overs. Seales was the standout among the bowlers, taking only 22 deliveries to grab 3/9 and finishing with a career-best 6/61. The 22-year-old bowled with energy, moving the ball consistently through the air and off the seam.

The hosts were left with a target of 263, which was a daunting challenge given South Africa’s formidable bowling unit on a third-day surface in Providence. Kagiso Rabada took the opening wicket, removing Mikyle Louis for four before Mulder took out captain Kraig Brathwaite. The hosts fell to 104/6 in the fifth over before tea, leaving Joshua da Silva and the bowlers to come.

South Africa Captain Temba Bavuma made a brilliant catch at mid-on off Rabada’s bowling to send Shamar Joseph back to the pavilion. Maharaj claimed the last wicket as Seales surged forward and was caught by David Bedingham at short leg. The victory extended SA’s unbroken Test series record against the West Indies, which dates back to the first match in 1998/99.

Meanwhile, the Windies defeated the Proteas in a one-off match in Barbados in 1992. Kieran Powell, a left-hander, resisted South African bowling for two and a half hours, scoring 51 runs, nine of which were boundaries, but his side was defeated. Powell fell after he attempted to throw Maharaj into the onside but was caught by Anrich Nortje on the midwicket boundary.

Keegan Petersen captured Jason Holder, the world’s top-ranked Test all-rounder, at short-leg with the next ball. Joshua da Silva came next, and Wiaan Mulder caught him at slip off Maharaj for a duck. West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite was out early when he edged Kagiso Rabada (3/44) to South African skipper Dean Elgar at first slip.
