South Africans were stuck in the opposite situation from the Indians, who were filled with joy and pleasure during the 2024 T20 World Cup final. The Proteas, for whom this was their first major final in history, were heartbroken after losing a final. They had seemingly put themselves in a position from which defeat was improbable. Meanwhile, India’s players, especially veterans like captain Rohit Sharma and batter Virat Kohli, who had been unable to win a major title in multiple previous seasons, were all over the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
South Africa Suffers A Horrible Loss
During the tournament, Aiden Markram, the SA captain, stated that he wanted to allow himself as much time as necessary to get over that loss. That match was played more than 50 days ago. “I should give it as much time as it needs,” he stated on Tuesday at a press conference in Guyana. In Guyana, South Africa defeated the West Indies by 40 runs in the second Test to win the series.
“At the moment, it was difficult to accept. It’s been easier to manage, cope with, process, and put to bed since then,” Markram remarked. It’s nice to reboot and move away from it. Heinrich Klaasen brought his team within 30 runs of winning off the final 30 balls. While chasing a target of 177, he smacked 24 runs off Axar Patel’s 15th over.
South Africa was the clear favorite with him and David Miller in the middle for the Proteas and Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj to come. Just as victory seemed certain, though, India cruelly tightened its grip. They prompted the wickets to fall. In the 17th over, Jansen lost to Jasprit Bumrah, and in the 18th over, Klaasen was bowled out by Hardik Pandya.
Markram’s team needed a daunting 16 runs off the final over as Arshdeep Singh’s frugal 19th over, which yielded just four runs, significantly raised the stakes. Heartbreakingly, South Africa lost by seven runs. But Pandya struck again with Miller, who was out on the first ball because of a wonderful catch by Suryakumar Yadav.
India’s Bowling Pressure

India choked the batsmen for runs and the wickets began to tumble just as it appeared they would finally lay to rest the label of “chokers.” Jansen lost to Jasprit Bumrah in the 18th over, while Klaasen lost to Hardik Pandya in the 17th. South Africa needed to score 16 runs off the last over after Arshdeep Singh gave up just four runs in the 19th over. Suryakumar Yadav’s now-famous catch allowed Pandya to dismiss Miller with the opening ball, and South Africa, very surprisingly, came up seven runs short of the objective.
To ensure that he wouldn’t have to deal with any conversations on the subject, Markram stated he took a break from the game for a while and it helped. “Fortunately, I managed to take a break from the game and avoid conversations about cricket that could rekindle the debate,” the South African skipper stated. “It felt good to step back from that and start over. Everyone digests it essentially for themselves. Ensuring that you are content with the conclusion of the situation is likely the most crucial step. for you to proceed and go on.”
