Soler Hits Longest Home Run of 2024

Jorge Soler, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants

Jorge Soler launched a 478-foot home run earlier today in the San Francisco Giants Sunday matchup with the Colorado Rockies. This 478-foot shot was the longest home run across MLB this season. It just edged out Shohei Ohtani’s 476-foot home run earlier this year.

Since entering the league in 2014, Soler has been known as one of the biggest power hitters in the game. He has struggled to stay on the field for most of his career due to injuries, but when he barrels up a ball, it goes a mile. Soler has struggled in his first year as a Giant. Hopefully, this signals that he is turning things around for the second half of the season.

The 478-foot home run was the longest home run of 2024, but where does that stack up against the longest home runs of the Statcast era?

Jorge Soler Passes Shohei Ohtani For Longest Home Run of 2024

Jorge Soler hit leadoff for the Giants in their Sunday afternoon game at Coors Field against the Rockies. Coors Field is a launching pad for home runs due to the mile-high altitude in Denver, Colorado. On a 2-1 pitch, Soler took a 94-mile-per-hour sinker and smacked it halfway up the bleachers in straight away center field to give the Giants a 1-0 lead one at-bat into the game.

The Soler home run just outdid Shohei Ohtani’s 476-foot home run at Coors Field last month. Coors Field is now the site of the longest and second-longest home runs of the 2024 MLB season. It would not be surprising to see a hitter launch one 479-plus feet at Coors Field before the season is over.

Longest Home Runs Of Statcast Era

The statcast era was introduced to MLB in 2015. A system was installed in all 30 MLB ballparks that use cameras and radars to measure metrics, including distance of home runs. As far as Soler and Ohtani hit their home runs, neither of them was close to the farthest home runs in MLB since Statcast was introduced.

The longest home run in the Statcast era belongs to Nomar Mazara in 2019. Mazara, a member of the Texas Rangers at the time, hit a staggering 505-foot home run in the Old Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. There are only two other players to hit a ball 500 feet or farther. Giancarlo Stanton in 2016 and CJ Cron in 2022 each hit home runs that went 504 feet.

Soler Trying To Turn Season Around

The Giants signed Jorge Soler hoping he would finally be the first Giant to hit 30 home runs in a season since Barry Bonds in 2007. As of now, Soler has only hit 11 home runs. This coupled with his .225 batting average has resulted in a disappointing season. The Giants and Soler hope this helps him turn it around before it’s too late in 2024.

Soler is an all-star and World Series MVP but has struggled to stay on the field throughout his career due to injuries. When he’s healthy he is a force at the plate. He is one of the most powerful sluggers in the game. His most famous home run was in the 2021 World Series against the Houston Astros. As a member of the Atlanta Braves, he hit a ball so far it landed on the train tracks at Minute Maid Park. Soler ended up winning WSMVP, powering the Braves to the championship.

The potential is no doubt there for Soler to turn around his season. The Giants are currently still a few games back in the Wild card race. The time is now for Soler and the Giants.
