Sixers Training Camp Day 2 Highlight: Tyrese Maxey’s Outlook

sixers training camp, Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers

Tyrese Maxey will be a spectacle to watch next season. After finishing last season with a stellar performance, the 23-year-old guard could be in the MVP talks for next season. Tyrese’s work ethic and enthusiasm during this Sixers training camp would be the key to the team’s success. What were some key takeaways?

Tyrese Maxey’s Outlook with the Sixers Training Camp

Tyrese Maxey has been optimistic about next season. Due to his improved performance last season the reigning Most Improved Player got a max extension from the Sixers franchise. During the Sixers media day, he discussed how well he improved his game during the summer. Also, he showed his desire to uplift the team next season.

What stood out from Tyrese Maxey’s training camp activities was his leadership skills. Nick Nurse, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Joel Embiid condemned how well Tryese has grown throughout the summer. Also, Tyrese Maxey revealed what he’d be working on during this training camp

Reactions on Tyrese Maxey’s Growth as a Leader

Tyrese Maxey’s growth as a leader impressed both his coach and teammates. Last season the All-Star player stood out in performance without Joel Embiid on the court. Thus, here’s what Nick Nurse has to say:

“When we first started last year playing games, I was like ‘Oh boy. We got a really long way to go with him using his voice, and leadership wise’. And then I thought he grew really fast in like 6 or 8 weeks, so I think he’s assumed more of that [this year]”

Nick Nurse also said he indulges in “high-level conversations” with Tyrese about “what is happening and what needs to happen.” Also, the Sixers head coach commended the 23-year-old for his willingness to listen and improve despite being an aspiring leader of the team. Here’s what Nick Nurse said:

“Like today, [I] had a really long talk with him before practice about some things I saw yesterday that I needed to see differently, and he went out and did them today. Just getting him to see and understand what the team needs, and how he fits into the middle of all that.”

Joel Embiid also had an opinion on Tyrese Maxey’s leadership on the court. The Cameroonians acknowledged that Tyrese has grown better than last year. Also, Joel spoke on the contrast between his kind of leadership and Tyrese’s.

“[He is] taking more of the role to be a vocal leader, screaming…I’m not screaming. I just give you the look if I’m mad at you. When you combine that [with] my way, it makes a perfect match.”

Tyrese On His Improved Skill

Throughout the offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers offloaded and reloaded their roster. Tyrese Maxey became the key for a new Sixers roster after his stellar performance last year. Now, the 23-year-old needs to open the door for an improved team performance with more new faces on the roster.

The Sixers team’s stars Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey would be the sight of attraction for other NBA coaches next season. Therefore, the stars should be more of a playmaker to set up their teammates for success. Tyrese understood the assignment, and that’s why he spent the summer working on his playmaking skills. Here’s what Tyrese had to say:

Honestly, the biggest thing for me was just making reads when I [got] into the paint. In the league, the shot quality right now you gotta be able to shoot 3s and make 3s, and I think we’ll be able to do that. I have some athletic friends, but not athletic [ones] like KJ Martin and Andre Drummond athletic, so I didn’t get to work on lobs.
