Simone Biles struck gold again in Paris. On Thursday, August 1, the beloved gymnast won the women’s all-around competition to secure yet another victory for Team USA. Biles’ win marks her sixth Olympic gold medal win and her ninth medal overall (she also has one silver medal and two bronze medals). As a result, she remains the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history. Biles’ teammate, Sunisa Lee, also competed in Thursday’s event and until today was the defending champion of the women’s all-around event.
Team USA In The All-Around Event
In Thursday’s all-around event, Team USA walked away with two medals thanks to Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee. Biles placed first and took home the gold, while Lee placed third, securing the bronze medal for the United States. Rebeca Andrade of Brazil took home the silver medal.
Funnily enough, Biles’ victory knocked her teammate Lee from the reigning champion slot. Lee previously took home the gold medal at the women’s all-around event in Tokyo in 2020, while Biles won the event in Rio in 2016. Lee and Biles were the only two gymnasts from the United States to compete in today’s all-around event.
Second Time’s the Charm for Simone Biles
Per ESPN, with Simone Biles’ win at today’s all-around competition, she becomes only the third female Olympian in history to win gold in the same event, the first from the United States and the first in over 50 years. Prior two-time winners include Maria Gorokhovskaya of the Soviet Union and Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia, in 1964 and 1968, respectively.
According to Maggie Astor of The New York Times, all three of today’s all-around medalists are actually second-time all-around event medalists. Before today, that had never happened before in the history of women’s gymnastics. Sunisa Lee won gold in the event at the Tokyo Games, while Rebeca Andrade once again won the silver. Andrade’s win in 2021 marked the first-ever Olympic medal for a female Brazilian gymnast. Andrade has since gone on to become the most decorated Latin American gymnast of all time.
Women’s Gymnastics Upcoming Events

The competition in Paris is far from over, with many events in women’s gymnastics still to come. There are still many Olympic events left for women’s gymnastics, including the vault final, the uneven bars final, the balance beam final, and the floor exercise final. The final events will take place as follows: Saturday, August 3, will be the vault final; Sunday, August 4, will be the uneven bars final, and Monday, August 5, will be the balance beam and floor exercise finals.
With four more events left to go, Simone Biles and Team USA have plenty of opportunities to win more Olympic medals. Biles and fellow Team USA member Jade Carey both qualified for the vault final, while Lee was the only American gymnast to qualify for the uneven bars final. Leading up to the Games, Lee told NBC that winning a medal in the uneven bars final was one of her major goals of the competition.
More Medals in the Cards for Simone Biles?
Missing qualifying for the uneven bars final by mere tenths of a point, Biles will be deemed a “reserve athlete” for Sunday’s event. If, for some reason, one of the other eight gymnasts is unable to compete, then Biles will step in. But have no fear, Biles will also compete in the balance beam final on Monday alongside Lee. This will be Biles’ third appearance in the event, having won the bronze medal in the balance beam finals in both 2016 and 2020.
Finally comes the floor exercise final. Biles and fellow American Jordan Chiles have both qualified for the event. Biles won the event back in Rio in 2016 and was favored to win again in 2020, but had to withdraw from the competition for mental health reasons. Let’s hope she earns another chance at the podium in this year’s competition.
Tune in to the Paris Olympics this weekend to see the outcome of these events. Here’s hoping Team USA can pull out another victory for women’s gymnastics. Finally, after a record-breaking Olympic showing, it will be interesting to see if Biles can walk away with even more gold.
