The Indian cricketing spectrum is abuzz with the latest verdict coming from a BCCI official regarding Shreyas Iyer’s future in Test cricket. Ever since there have been just mixed messages coming through after a rather disappointing show for Iyer in the 2024 Duleep Trophy Team D captained by Iyer, just 104 runs in four innings, including a duck and one half-century during the event. After he had started his Test career with great promise three years ago, Iyer’s recent struggle against cricket forms another shadow in his Test career, particularly in the upcoming series against Australia.
Shreyas Iyer: From Bright Beginnings to Recent Challenges
The first tour in Test cricket by Iyer was nothing but brilliant, as his first century on the Kanpur campus against New Zealand was a pointer to great things indeed. Challenges were soon forthcoming in the form of short-pitched deliveries. His last two years have been unexciting enough in Test cricket, even in home conditions. At 146 runs in eight innings, Iyer’s form has raised many eyebrows as his recent stint in the Duleep Trophy hasn’t helped him too well.
In any case, Iyer lost his place in the Indian Test team during this summer and also did not feature in the BCCI’s list of centrally contracted players for the new season. A decent show in the Duleep Trophy, as the captain of either of the teams, was in store, especially when the Bangladesh Test series was around the corner. He failed to deliver. His batting just did not click in Duleep Trophy from one day to the next.
Although the present form shows a lot of setbacks for Iyer, there is still very marginal room for him to recover. He will get his opportunity to make amends in the remaining games of the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup, for which he is most likely to be picked up by Mumbai.
Opportunity to Rebound
Another BCCI official stated that considering Iyer’s performance in the past, including a good outing last year in the ODI World Cup, his recent form can’t be ignored. The official did concede that the injuries affected him, but for a comeback, it needs to be consistent. For that, the Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy might turn out to be important for Iyer to prove himself.
In summary, the road ahead for Shreyas Iyer would be pretty tough to regain his position in the Indian Test team again. This verdict from the BCCI was an example of how competitive Indian cricket had become and how high the standards to attain a position in the team are. While one can always keep hope alive that Iyer might look to make a comeback in domestic cricket with good performances, the current scenario points towards him not making it to the Australian tour. At present, Iyer will need to prove himself in the domestic circuit and rectify the reasons that led him to this position.
