Shohei Ohtani Sets New Dodgers Record, Outshines His Manager

Shohei Ohtani

It was a big day for Shohei Ohtani regarding the headlines with the Dodgers. He added another feather to the pile of an already remarkable career. This time, it came in the stolen base department. He swiped three bases in an 11-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, setting a new record for the most stolen bases in a single season by a Japanese player in Dodgers history. The swiftness and finesse were in full view as he created history.

Ohtani’s first steal came in the fourth inning as he walked to first and then took off to the next base and slid in just ahead of the throw. That steal was his 44th of the season, showing his prowess on the bases.

In the seventh inning, the Dodgers were up 3-1, and Ohtani singled to right. Mookie Betts subsequently came to bat; he elected to again steal second. Ohtani beat the tag from the Diamondbacks’ catcher, Adrian Del Castillo, that tied him with manager Dave Roberts. Roberts had set the previous record with 45 steals in 2002.

Breaking the Record

Ohtani wasn’t done. On the very next pitch, Ohtani swiped third base. A curveball from Jordan Montgomery hit the dirt and Ohtani was free to take it. It set a new franchise record with his 46th stolen base of the season.

With 46 stolen bases and 44 home runs, Ohtani is drawing close to history. He needs just four steals and six home runs to join the select club of players with a 50/50 season, which no player in MLB history has ever done. The great feat would add to his stellar career and thus go down as one of his finest moments. Ohtani visits Angel Stadium for the first time in a two-game series against his former Angels. This is his first regular-season appearance with the Dodgers at the stadium after an earlier exhibition game.

The Special Return

So, Angels fans gave Ohtani a warm reception during his exhibition game earlier this year. This series will be emotional, therefore, for him; the difference now is that the stakes are higher since it counts toward the regular season.

This latest feat by Shohei Ohtani showed once again just how talented he is and just how he has affected the record books of the Dodgers. With the base-stealing and home run capabilities good to go, he’s going to set some more records very soon and make history. He’ll be heading back to Angel Stadium as fans and teammates alike await what’s next for the rest of this season.
