AEW Double or Nothing was held on May 26th, 2024, and it saw massive title changes as well as a huge return.
The main event of the PPV was an Anarchy in the Arena match between Team AEW (Bryan Danielson, Darby Allin, FTR) and The Elite. The match ended with the Elite on top, as the reformed faction stood tall amongst the babyfaces. There were also multiple new champions crowned, as Will Ospreay became the new AEW International Champion and Mercedes Mone defeated Willow Nightingale for the AEW TBS Championship.
Double or Nothing 2024 will go down as one of the most important PPVS in the company’s history, especially since it featured the return of MJF.
MJF’s Return
At Double or Nothing 2024, Adam Cole came out to the ring to address the fans. He explained in brief that the Devil is on top and that no one is better than him. Then a vignette started playing, and it became instantly clear who was making their return as the instantly recognizable theme song started playing.
Then, MJF’s music hit once more and he finally made his return after 5 months of being out of action. He entered the ring coming face-to-face with his biggest rival, and hit him with a low blow forcing Cole to escape. MJF then grabbed the mic and addressed Adam, explaining that Adam was the only man he ever trusted and that he’d make sure never to make that mistake again.
He then cut a passionate promo, explaining how MJF was a self-made man and even name-dropped Vince McMahon. His contract expired on January 1st, 2024, which left fans concerned that he might leave the company. However, he explained in his first-ever promo back that he wasn’t planning on going anywhere, as he revealed a new tattoo he got which represented AEW.
Feud vs Adam Cole
It seems clear that MJF’s first feud back after his return will be against his former best friend Adam Cole. Adam Cole and MJF had a long history as friends, as they went from forced tag team partners to tag team champions. They both headlined All in 2023 for the AEW World Championship, a match that MJF won and then embraced each other after the main event.
That was the same PPV they became ROH Tag Team Champions, however, Adam Cole got injured not too long after that so there were multiple occasions MJF defended the title on his own. During this time, MJF’s devil mask was stolen and there were vignettes showing signs of a new devil. This led to multiple attacks done on MJF, The Acclaimed, and some of his opponents as well.
At Worlds End 2023, it was revealed that MJF’s best friend was the devil all along. Cole was the one tormenting MJF for the past few months and he was faking their friendship ever since they first teamed up. That was the last time MJF was seen on AEW television until his return at Double or Nothing, and it’s certain that these two will have a very heated feud with each other.
AEW World Championship Pursuit
Prior to MJF’s long break from the company, he was the AEW World Champion. He lost his title to Samoa Joe at Worlds End 2023 after Adam Cole “accidentally” cost him the match.
MJF will likely look for revenge against Samoa Joe as those two also had a heated rivalry with each other, but then there’s the idea of him going after the new AEW World Champion, Swerve Strickland. Although they didn’t have any feud with each other, the two had a major segment with each other in late 2023, hinting at a potential future match.
It could be very likely with the current circumstances that a match between Swerve Strickland and MJF could happen soon, and it would be interesting to see if the returning superstar could win his championship back. However, it definitely seems like MJF will hunt down Adam Cole first, and might then transition into a world title feud.
