Toshiki Shimomachi put up a spirited fight in a 10-round bout to defeat Ryuyu Tsugawa for the Japanese Super Bantamweight Title by a close and hard-fought decision after the latter knocked down the former in the eighth round. While the scorecards were in favor of the latter, the match was a close one and Tsugawa was dominating throughout the fight, coming close to turning the tide in his favor. Both fighters put on a good fight but Shimomachi’s technical ability and desire to win was enough for him to come out on top.
Shimomachi’s Resilience Seals Narrow Win Over Tsugawa:
Toshiki Shimomachi recovered from a knockdown in the eighth round to secure a hard-fought victory over a gritty and determined Ryuyu Tsugawa in a 10-round battle.
While the judges‘ scorecards—96-93, 96-93, and 97-92—suggested a clear win for Shimomachi, the fight itself felt much closer. In the eighth round, Tsugawa rocked Shimomachi with a left hook-right hand combination that nearly turned the tide of the fight. Although Tsugawa finished strong, his late surge wasn’t enough to sway the judges.
The first round was mostly cautious, with Tsugawa landing the best punch of the session—a straight right down the middle.
Shimomachi’s Precision Outsmarts Tsugawa’s Pressure in Intense Clash
The action picked up in the second round, with both fighters having their moments. The taller, rangy southpaw Shimomachi often gave up his height advantage to trade shots with Tsugawa on the inside.
Shimomachi, a 27-year-old from Osaka with 19-1-3 (12 KOs), concentrated on body shots, throwing lead right hooks and long lefts. He was mobile inside the ring, putting pressure on Tsugawa who could not find an opening to land clean punches, though he would get caught with occasional punches in return.
In the fifth boxing round, Shimomachi landed a straight left, and as the fight progressed, he began to pull ahead on the scorecards. Tsugawa, with a record of 13-2 (9 KOs), landed a solid left to the body in the sixth round and kept pressing forward despite swelling cheeks.
Shimomachi Survives Knockdown to Outlast Tsugawa in Thrilling Finish
By the seventh round, Tsugawa found some success with his right hand, possibly edging the round, although Shimomachi landed the best punch—a sharp left. In the eighth round, Tsugawa’s relentless pressure paid off as he caught Shimomachi with a left-right combination that dropped him to the canvas. Shimomachi got back to his feet, clearly shaken, and struggled to regain his composure.
But by the ninth round, the Toshiki appeared to be rejuvenated, and the two fighters fought toe-to-toe until the end of the fight. Tsugawa kept on attacking and attacking and when he had Shimomachi backed to the ropes he received a left to the chin from the Japanese fighter just before the round came to a close. Although Tsugawa tried to overturn the situation in the end, it was Toshiki’s earlier work that helped him to win.
