Shaheen Afridi in Spotlight for Alleged Misbehavior During Tours

Shaheen Shah Afridi Considers Global T20 Canada League

Pakistan limited-overs fast bowler, Shaheen Afridi, has recently become the talk of the town for his aggressive behavior towards head coach Gary Kirsten and other coaching staff on the England tour and the T20 World Cup 2024.

These reports indicate that there were some cases of physical confrontations with the members of the opposing team, and the team managers were aware of these events, but they never considered it fit to take any action against the pacer.

There are existing rumors from Geo News that Shaheen Afridi was rude and abusive to the coaching staff during the recent tours. Nevertheless, no punitive measures were taken by the team managers, which has also provoked some controversy about the management of the team.

It has been revealed that the pacer was rude to the coaches and management during the recent tours but was not restrained by the team managers from doing the wrong thing. The report stated:

In this case, the managers were failing in their duty of ensuring that discipline is kept within the team, and thus there is a lot that needs to be explained as to why action was not taken against Shaheen Afridi after he misbehaved.

The pace bowler was forced to respond and took to his social media handle to write a brief message. Metuh had posted a video of himself having a bowling practice session, along with the caption ‘Rise Above’. This photo can be considered his response to the controversy without directly stating a word about the incident.

PCB’s Stand and Shifts in the Selection Panel

The PCB made a couple of changes to the selection committee a few days ago, but it has not released any statement regarding matters relating to Shaheen Afridi. As for the bowler, despite no latest updates from the PCB Chairman, the board has unilaterally gone ahead to change all the national selectors.

This particular decision has raised many eyebrows, and there has been a lot of debate within the cricket fraternity.

Notably, the PCB has now appointed Mohsin Khan to the position of selection committee. For this promotion, the PCB informed Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that they would not require the services of the two in the future. This decision entails a shift in terms of makeup for the selection committee.

For the men’s team, Abdul Razzaq was serving an important position involved in selections as well as for the women’s team. This will, however, mean something different for the selection committee, which benefited from his experience and insights.

On the other hand, Wahab Riaz worked as a selector only for the men’s team. Its exclusion has also sparked controversy, especially because he has been active, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about cricket.

Frequent Changes in PCB’s Selection Committee

In the last four years, the PCB has witnessed a huge change in top selectors, where six men—Wahab, Mohammad Wasim, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Haroon Rashid, and Misbah-ul-Haq—have served the department treacherously.

Reports conveyed to Geo News suggested that Wahab and Mansoor were implicated in showing certain players favors. The selected and favored players were named on the team, and they let the team down, thus raising more eyebrows over their inclusion on the team as well as other decisions taken by the management.

The revolving door and the recent controversy around the usage of the PCB serve to magnify the issues and the dynamic nature of Pakistan cricket, especially when it comes to players and selection.
