Sevilla vs. Villarreal: Preview

sevilla

On Friday evening, Sevilla and Villarreal will face off at Estadio Ramón in an intriguing match-up, both coming off 2-2 draws in their La Liga season openers. Sevilla drew 2-2 with Las Palmas in their first match of the new campaign.  Despite taking the lead twice, Sevilla were unable to secure a win, with Sandro Ramirez scoring the equalizer in the 71st minute after Juanlu Sanchez had briefly given them a 2-1 lead.

Having finished 14th in La Liga last season, their worst top-flight finish since 2000, the former Europa League winners are keen to improve this term. The club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in seven new players, including Saul Niguez on loan from Atletico Madrid and Kelechi Iheanacho. A win here will ensure a great motivational boost as both teams have not had a positive start to the season. Both teams will look forward to getting back to winning ways and continuing their form throughout the season.

Sevilla have had mixed results against Villarreal recently, winning only one of their last five encounters, though they did draw 1-1 in their previous meeting last season. Sevilla aims to secure a top-four finish this season and return to the Champions League.

Villarreal, on the other hand, had a promising start with a 2-2 draw against Atletico. Arnaut Danjuma put them ahead twice, but the game ended in a stalemate after Alexander Sorloth scored to level the match. They finished eighth last season, missing out on the top seven for only the second time since their return to the top flight in 2013. They have made seven new signings this summer, including Luiz Junior from Famalicao and Willy Kambwala, Ayoze Perez, and Nicolas Pepe.

Team News and Starting-XI

The Yellow Submarine has seen key departures like Sorloth and Filip Jorgensen, who moved to Chelsea. Sevilla will be without Suso and Albert Sambi Lokonga due to injuries, but otherwise, the team is in good shape for this fixture. Head coach Garcia Pimienta will likely start Saul, who was suspended for the previous match, potentially replacing Dodi Lukebakio. Most of the squad from the Las Palmas game is expected to start again, with Juanlu Sanchez and Isaac Romero continuing their roles.

For Villarreal, Luiz Junior is set to debut, replacing Diego Conde in goal. The rest of the team may remain unchanged from their game against Atletico, with Yeremy Pino and Alex Baena on the wings, and Danjuma playing centrally with Gerard Moreno. Denis Suarez, Juan Foyth, and Alfonso Pedraza will remain sidelined for this match.

Sevilla Possible Starting Lineup: Nyland; Carmona, Nianzou, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Agoume, Sow; Ocampos, Saul, J. Sanchez; Romero

Villarreal Possible Starting Lineup: Junior; Femenia, Albiol, Bailly, Cardona; Pino, Parejo, Comesana, Baena; G. Moreno, Danjuma
