Sevilla vs Girona: Preview

Sevilla

Sevilla will aim for their first win of the season as they host Girona at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday. On the other hand, Girona will be looking to secure back-to-back victories after their impressive midweek win over Osasuna. Sevilla’s new manager, Garcia Pimienta, has had a challenging start, with his team earning just two points from their first three games.

Currently sitting in 17th place, Sevilla is among the seven teams that have yet to win in La Liga this season. They have got a lot to do if they really are to put themselves as a contender. To change their fortunes, they need to defeat Girona for the first time since December 2018, when goals from Ever Banega and Pablo Sarabia secured a 2-0 win at their home ground.

The Andalusian side began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas and then lost 2-1 to Villarreal at home after conceding a late goal. Sevilla’s bid for their first win of the season faltered in a 0-0 draw against Mallorca, extending their winless streak to seven league games since their 3-0 victory over Granada in May.

Girona, after a busy summer of squad changes, including the departures of Artem Dovbyk, Savinho, Aleix Garcia, and Yan Couto, made several key additions like Bryan Gil, Yaser Asprilla, Abel Ruiz, and Bojan Miovski. Despite a rocky start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Real Betis and a 3-0 loss to Atletico Madrid, Girona rebounded strongly with a 4-0 victory over Osasuna, with goals from Gil, Ruiz, Viktor Tsygankov, and Cristhian Stuani.

Although Girona are away on Sunday, they have a strong record against Sevilla, having won their last five encounters, including a 2-1 victory last season.

Team News and Starting-XI

Sevilla will be without attacker Suso, who is still sidelined with a knee injury, and Atletico Madrid loanee Saul Niguez, who will serve a one-match suspension for a red card received against Mallorca. Kike Salas, Juanlu, Lucien Agoume, and Isaac Romero are all in contention for recalls, and Lucas Ocampos is expected to return after missing the midweek match.

Richard Artero and Jastin are still injured for Girona, and Valery Fernandez is doubtful due to illness. Midfielder Yangel Herrera, who was substituted with a knock in Thursday’s win, is expected to be available. Coach Michel may switch from a 4-4-2 formation against Osasuna to a 4-3-3 to strengthen the midfield with Oriol Romeu.

Sevilla possible starting lineup: Nyland; Carmona, Nyland, Salas, Pedrosa; Juanlu, Lokonga, Agoume; Lukebakio, Ocampos, Romero

Girona’s possible starting lineup: Gazzaniga; Frances, Lopez, Blind, Gutierrez; Herrera, Romeu, Martin; Tsygankov, Gil, Ruiz
