Brentford have secured the services of Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool in a deal reportedly worth up to £25m. The Bees signed the talented 22-year-old Dutchman on a five-year contract with the club. Sepp van den Berg rejected offers from various teams, including the reigning German champions, Bayer Leverkusen. Brentford agreed to pay an initial fee of £20m, with an extra £5m in add-ons. Also, a 17.5% sell-on clause for Liverpool.
Sepp van den Berg Joins Brentford
Brentford FC have just completed the signing of Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool. According to Sky News, Brentford has reportedly reached an agreement to acquire the services of the center-back for a fee of £25m, with an additional £5m in potential add-ons. Sepp van den Berg made his move to Liverpool in 2019, transferring from Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle for a fee of £4.4m. Since then, he has only made four senior appearances for the club.
Another team that showed interest in Sepp van den Berg is Bayer Leverkusen. During an interview with Brentford FC, he revealed that his decision to join the club was influenced by a conversation with his former Liverpool teammate, Fábio Carvalho, who had also recently joined the Brentford squad. Sepp van den Berg said:
It feels amazing! I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time now. I had a few phone calls and a meeting with the manager, where he told me why they wanted me here, they showed me what qualities they see in me as a player, so it was all positive.
When asked on why he chose Brentford, Sepp van den Berg replied:
Just the appreciation I felt from the manager [Thomas Frank], from other people I spoke to here, even me coming here today: everybody is just so nice. I really, really like it here. Me and Fábio have also been texting and, when he moved here, I told him that I was also in talks with Brentford, so that was funny! I texted him this morning – I’m sitting next to him in the changing room as well, so I’m looking forward to seeing him again.
Playing football is the most enjoyable thing for every player, especially for me. I just want to help the team wherever I can. Personally, playing as many games as I can, that’s what I came here for. I also want to develop myself and help the team achieve things that have never happened before – maybe Europe – you have to dream big!
