Seattle Seahawks DE Uchenna Nwosu To Miss Several Weeks With Knee Injury

Seattle Seahawks

It was a thrilling 37-33 win for the Seattle Seahawks over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, but the win came at a very heavy cost. Head Coach Mike McDonald had some of his worst fears realized with injuries to key players that might keep them sidelined for quite a few weeks. They lost DE Uchenna Nwosu due to a knee injury. The attention now shifts to how these injuries are going to affect the defensive plans of the team entering this year.

They lost starting Outside Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, one of their big defensive pieces. He got hurt in the first quarter, the result of a rough chop block from Browns Guard Wyatt Teller and a shot from Running Back Jerome Ford. Although Nwosu could walk off, he returned with his knee iced and headed into the locker room shortly after. That is a big blow to the Seattle Seahawks defense, with Nwosu being one of the central players in their lineup.

Slot Cornerback Artie Burns also went down in the game. He left after the Seattle Seahawks’ first drive and was carted off the field due to a foot/ankle injury. Macdonald confirmed postgame that it was to his foot, but added the complete extent was unknown. The timing couldn’t be worse, with final roster decisions a week away for the team.

Uncertainty Surrounds Recovery

McDonald did say they would need a few more days to fully understand the extent of both injuries. For now, they don’t know whether Nwosu or Burns will miss any amount of time. They will likely have to decide to place either on IR before the final roster cuts on Tuesday. They would not play this season if they were put on IR before the roster is finalized.

If Nwosu and Burns are not put on IR at the beginning, they could be out for at least four games if they get placed on the list at a later time. That strategy would keep them on the roster while allowing the Seattle Seahawks to tinker with their lineup. What happens with each is part of the tightrope team walk between taking care of injuries and having the best 53 players possible when the season starts.

Past Injuries Add To Concern

That makes Uchenna Nwosu’s injury even more harmful, as he had been a player with recent damage to his body. During last season, he tore a pectoral muscle and never played another game for the rest of the 2023 campaign. Furthermore, adding to the worry was the fact that Artie Burns just got a vote of confidence from the team, especially after the trade of veteran Cornerback Mike Jackson. Of course, his injury raises further questions about the defensive lineup.

Throughout this season, both Nwosu and Burns were two of the most important elements in the Seattle Seahawks’ defense. Now, without them, there is going to be a big hole that the Seattle Seahawks need to fill right away. The team will have to reorganize its defense, with other players needing to fill their roles.

These injuries put the Seattle Seahawks in a position to have to make very tough roster and strategy decisions. The next few days will go a long way in determining how well they adapt. The reshaping of plans for the season and how they surmount these challenges is closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
