Seattle Seahawks Bring In Maryland Passer to Rookie Camp May 3-6

Seattle Seahawks Taulia Tagovailoa

According to the NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, Tua Tagovailoa’s younger brother, Taulia, will accept an invite and attend rookie mini-camp for the Seattle Seahawks this coming weekend.

The highly decorated college quarterback with NFL bloodlines will get his shot to enter the NFL unconventionally on a tryout basis. The super senior was not picked in the draft out of the other 11 quarterbacks selected this past weekend.

Taulia was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and didn’t test at the Maryland Pro Day. The former Maryland quarterback participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl and consecutively led the Terps to three Bowl-winning seasons.

The Maryland long-time starter and the former Crimson Tide transfer petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility but was denied, thus declaring for the NFL Draft. He was not a draftable prospect due to his size at 5’11” and 208 pounds, along with his risky nature of turning the football over.

Seattle Seahawks: Giving Tua’s Brother Taulia a Tryout

The 24-year-old spent five seasons in college football, from Alabama in 2019 to then transfer to Maryland in 2020. Within that half-decade, he had one year with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua at Bama before going to College Park for the remaining four seasons.

With the Terps, Taulia Tagovailoa was the all-time passer in program history, throwing for 11,356 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions on a 67.1 completion percentage. His best seasons were in 2021 and this past year, throwing for over 3,000 yards with 25 plus passing touchdowns, but with 11 interceptions in both years.

Taulia was the Pinstripe Bowl MVP in 2021, back-to-back second-team All-Big Ten the past two seasons, and Polynesian College Football Player of the Year in 2023. He beat out Curtis Painter as the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader.

Other records Taulia set for the Big Ten include the highest completion percentage min. 875 attempts career-wise. For Maryland, every season as a Terrapin he set some sort of record like a shopping list.

Seattle Seahawks: Have QB Competition Behind Geno

The Seattle Seahawks will have a competition for the backup and emergency backup positions at quarterback behind veteran Geno Smith. They decided to pass on spending high draft or any capital in the draft for a backup.

Although they traded for Sam Howell before the draft, he only has a year left in his deal with the Seahawks after 2024, so his spot isn’t set in stone. The former Washington Commanders starter from 2023 will be on the roster for at least one season, but with injuries to the position, there is a demand for a third passer on the roster.

While the Seattle Seahawks will bring in Taulia for rookie camp, they signed or are also adding Gannon’s Kory Curtis to the mix on a tryout basis as well. San Jose State’s Chevan Cordeiro did sign as an undrafted free-agent rookie, so there is no guarantee the former Terrapin will make the roster.

Taulia will have to impress the Seattle Seahawks staff this coming weekend during their rookie mini-camp to get a spot for training camp in the summer.
