Seattle Mariners Trade Ryne Stanek to New York Mets

The Seattle Mariners continue to play very well at home.

The Seattle Mariners are wheeling and dealing moves ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline as they are involved in another trade, this time including the New York Mets. Andy Martino of SNY is reporting that the Mariners are trading away reliever Ryne Stanek in exchange for Triple-A outfielder Rhylan Thomas. This deal makes both teams improve going forward so let’s take a look at exactly what this trade means for both teams going forward.

The Seattle Mariners are trading away one of their bullpen pieces in exchange for depth in the outfield. After trading for outfielder Randy Arozarena last night, this trade makes sense to replenish some talent after giving up the 12th and 22nd-ranked prospect in their system.  Ryne Stanek has been struggling this season as he has appeared in 46 games and is 6-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 39.0 innings. However, he is now heading to the National League and looking to help bolster the back-end of the New York Mets bullpen.

The Seattle Mariners have believed they are able to produce quality relievers and taking some money off their books certainly will help them going forward with paying other players. Getting a quality outfielder like Rhylan Thomas, who has a .705 OPS with five home runs and 31 RBIs in 74 games between Double-A and Triple-A makes sense for depth purposes. The Seattle Mariners now have protection if one of their outfielders lands on the Injured List going forward.

Why would the New York Mets make this deal?

Getting a back-end reliever like Ryne Stanek for the Mets, who have had some issues with their bullpen seems like a no-brainer. According to Spotrac, they are only on the hook for a little less than $1.4 million of Ryne Stanek’s contract for the remainder of the season. After trading for Phil Maton earlier this month, having guys like Adam Ottavino, Stanek and Maton before getting to Edwin Diaz will really help bridge the gap in the Big Apple.

The Mets are on fire right now and are trying to get into the playoffs. They have the lineup to do so and are neck-and-neck with the Atlanta Braves so bolstering the team for a playoff push is worth giving up a prospect. At the end of the day, prospects are like lottery tickets.
