Seattle Mariners Hitters Struggling In 2024

Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros

The Seattle Mariners offense has struck out at an alarming rate in the first half of the 2024 regular season. Seattle’s lineup has been punched out a whopping 1,013 times this season. That is 64 strikeouts clear of the Oakland Athletics who find themselves in second place in this category. The Seattle Mariners have struggled in recent years as it pertains to strikeouts as they struck out the second-most times during the 2023 regular season. Seattle had three players in the top ten last season in terms of most strikeouts.

Catcher Cal Raleigh is tied for fourth in the league with 118 strikeouts and Center Fielder Julio Rodriguez is 11th in the league with 110 strikeouts this season. There are nine Seattle Mariners players in the top 100 in the league in strikeouts. The team averaged over 10 strikeouts per game in the first half of the regular season. Will Seattle be able to cut down on their strikeouts as the second half of the season gets underway tomorrow?

Seattle Mariners Season Summary

Even with their strikeout woes at the dish, the Seattle Mariners(52-46) put together a solid first half of the season. They hold a slim lead one-game lead in the American League West over the Houston Astros and a five-game lead over defending champion Texas Rangers. Seattle struggled to end the first half as they went 3-5 over their last eight games. They dropped three of four games to the Angels to close out the first half. The team’s offense has not only struggled in the strikeout department this season. They are also last in the league in batting average, tied for 10th in home runs, and 27th in runs scored.

Seattle’s offense is paced by Rodriguez and Raleigh. Rodriguez leads the team in batting average at .267 while Raleigh is top 20 in the league in home runs with 20 and RBI with 61. The pitching staff of the Seattle Mariners has been the far stronger part of their ballclub this season. They are third in ERA, 16th in strikeouts, and are leading the league in opposing batting average and WHIP. Starting Pitcher Luis Castillo leads the team with eight wins and Logan Gilbert is 10th in the league in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and is leading the league in WHIP. They also are 10th in the league in bullpen ERA.

The Mariners had a strong pitching staff last season as well coming in with the third-best ERA and top 10 in strikeouts, opposing batting average, and WHIP.

Mariners Upcoming Schedule

Seattle begins the second half of their regular season tomorrow with a six-game homestand. They host the Houston Astros for a three-game set beginning tomorrow and the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series beginning on Monday. The Mariners are seeking their second trip to the MLB Playoffs in the last three seasons. The team will need to have better production from their offense in the second half of the regular season. The Seattle Mariners are in a competitive division and a loaded American League.

The Seattle Mariners sent two representatives to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game earlier this week. Those representatives were Gilbert and Closer Andres Munoz. Munoz is 18th in the league with 15 saves. Neither of these pitchers appeared in Tuesday’s game. With the second half getting underway tomorrow, it will be a critical final 60 games for the Seattle Mariners as they look to raise their level in the home stretch of the regular season.
