Sean Taylor Washington Statue to Elevate Legacy

Washington Commanders jerseys have been released.

According to reports, the Washington Commanders will build a new statue memorializing former safety Sean Taylor.

On X, Taylor’s daughter, Jackie Taylor, announced the new statue, expressing her thanks. She said, “I’m thankful for Josh Harris and the Commander’s family for their continued commitment to keep my Dad’s legacy alive. I look forward to sharing plans in the future and learning more about my Dad through this process. I’m forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support… I’m filled with gratitude in knowing that my Dad will forever be a part of the Burgundy and Gold family.” Jackie was only 18 months old at the time of Sean’s killing.  The Sean Taylor statue makes him the first former Commander to be memorialized this way.

Sean Taylor was killed during a botched burglary in 2007. He was 24.

The original memorial was not the best, and that’s probably an understatement. Revealed in 2022 on the 15th anniversary of his death, the design was a wireframe human wearing Sean Taylor’s uniform. That’s about it. There were also inaccuracies. The jersey was Nike-branded instead of Reebok. The cleats were reported to be wrong as well as the branding. There is also the helmet. It was commonly known Taylor often had a taped facemask.  Overall the presentation was a letdown for many Washington fans. While corrections were made, the feeling around the memorial was never really positive.

Sean Taylor’s Family Will Help Get It Right

This time around, things will be slightly different. Jackie, along with the Taylor family, will be assisting in plans for a statue to made in her father’s honor.

“After careful consideration, we have decided as an organization to remove the Sean Taylor installation from Commanders Field,” a team spokesperson said in a statement. “We realize that the installation fell short in honoring one of our franchise’s most iconic players. Together with the Taylor family, we are working on a plan, which includes unveiling a statue that will rightfully celebrate the legacy and impact that Sean had on our organization, fanbase and community. The Washington Commanders are committed to honoring our legends in a first-class manner.”

Even though it took them years to make the Memorial better, this is a great move in the right direction for the Commanders franchise. Considering their push to make some new steps in the right direction, this is good for the family, business, and fans.

Sean Taylor: Brief Pro Stats

Taylor was a first-round pick by the Commanders in the 2004 draft. He was named to the Pro Bowl following 2006, a year in which he led the Redskins in tackles. Overall, Taylor had 344 tackles (245 solo), 12 interceptions, 41 passes defended and four forced fumbles. The NFL named Sean Taylor to the 2007 Pro Bowl posthumously.
