Sean O’Malley is going to fight Merab Dvalishvili soon in UFC 306. O’Malley is the current UFC Bantamweight Champion and one of the most brutal and competitive fighters in the Bantamweight Division. Umar on the other hand is calling out Sean O’Malley now for a fight that would happen shortly. Umar fought against Cory in the UFC Abu Dhani and defeated Cory by decision.
After the Fight, Umar openly challenged the current Bantamweight Champion. Umar, as a Dagestani, has an incredible skill set in grappling and wrestling, but there is also another concept, which is that people usually think that Dagestani fighters do not have good striking skills. Umar not only showed his awesome grappling skills, but everyone was shocked to see the amazing Striking of the Dagestani.
Sean O’Malley Shows Interest
Sean O’Malley showed a lot of interest in the UFC Abu Dhabi fight because the winner of that fight would be the challenger for the Belt of Bantamweight. O’Malley appreciated Umar on his win against Cory. He also appreciated the skills and tactics that he used to fight his opponent. Umar had respect for Cory Sandhagen, that’s why Sean O’Malley is not disrespecting and not trash-talking about Umar.
He thinks that both of the fighters were awesome and they played well. But according to him they both were very close and Cory could’ve won if he performed a bit more. “It looked like Nurmagomedov did win but again that was a very close fight.” Sean O’Malley said.
As the current Bantamweight Champion respects and appreciates Cory as he is one of the best pound-for-pound Champions, he thinks that it makes sense if Umar has not fought with any other high-level fighter. So, defeating Cory is a great achievement for Umar Nurmagomedov. “Cory is, in my opinion, one of the best pound-for-pound guys in the world, so for Umar to be ranked No. 10 — which, a lot of the guys wouldn’t fight him.” Sean O’Malley wasn’t really surprised to see the win as he said, “I’m not surprised that he didn’t have that many high-level fights up until this or at least high-level, popular opponents. No one in the UFC wanted to fight this guy.”
Great Performance by Both Fighters
Unlike other Dagestani fighters, Umar was great at striking which made Cory defend himself rather than striking. Cory was forced to be defensive rather than offensive because Umar was not only using striking but also his wrestling skills to take Cory down and make him tired. “Incredible performance by both guys. Cory did a really good job shutting down Umar’s offensive takedowns and wrestling. Striking was very good. Umar looked like he landed harder shots. That’s as high a level of a fight as it gets.”
Umar would be a perfect opponent for Champion as he is gaining a lot of popularity, and this win has allowed him to be the perfect one to fight Sean O’Malley. There are other things besides all these factors that led Sean to accept the challenge.
Sean O’Malley Mocking Conor McGregor
As Conor lost a very famous fight with a great Champion named Khabib Nurmagomedov so, now if Sean defeats another Dagestani and dominates him, that would be something to trigger Conor McGregor as he’s famous for his trash-talking. “That would be a really good way to get at Conor. Imagine how jealous he would be. I might go whoop Umar just for that reason alone. Could be a potential massive next fight.”
Sean O’Malley has to get through Merab first, obviously, because he would be able to fight Umar if he lost against Merab, and all his assumptions and predictions would be lost with his loss against Merab. So, O’Malley should be focusing on his upcoming fight. Sean O’Malley himself said, “I’ve got to get through Merab next, obviously. We all know how dangerous Merab is. The guy has a nine-fight win streak. He’s beat like five former champions. Dude is as legit as it gets.”
