Suryakumar Yadav has led the T20I team to victory over Sri Lanka with two straight victories, sealing the three-match series. The star batsman has skippered India against South Africa and Australia in the past. But now, things have changed, and he is no longer the temporary captain for a trip; the selection committee chose him to succeed Rohit Sharma, who guided India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The selectors have also designated Suryakumar as a T20I captain because he has been left off of the ODI team lineup for the time being. Whereas, the former cricketer Scott Styris of New Zealand feels that Gautam Gambhir should ideally be preparing Shubman Gill as India’s long-term captain. And that Yadav is simply a short-term solution. But is it true, or is it being overblown by media outlets?
Styris on Suryakumar Yadav’s selection
Gambhir’s appointment as head coach gave Surya more responsibility because the selection committee was impressed with the Mumbai batter, and he was chosen over Hardik Pandya for the major part. Following Sharma’s withdrawal from the shorter format, the new man in charge named Yadav, also affectionately known as SKY, as India’s T20I captain.
Styris believes that longer-term plans are in the works after Gill was named vice-captain for the Sri Lankan tour in both the Twenty20 Internationals and the One-Day Internationals. Former all-rounder Scott Styris of New Zealand, however, contended that as Surya is only an interim solution for the Indian squad, new head coach Gautam Gambhir did not select a natural leader for the current side.

Speaking to India Today, Scott Styris stated, “I think he’s a short-term option. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captain amongst the players that he has right now. He’s buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain.” In order to prepare Shubman Gill for a future chance to lead the team in white-ball cricket, the selectors have also promoted him to vice-captain. Well, they might have a better plan for Gill.
Scott Styric believes that the BCCI will consider Shubman as their captain in the future. But that he isn’t ready yet. Why? Besides other reasons, Gill’s age can be a main factor to consider. Therefore, they made a wise decision by appointing Suryakumar Yadav to lead them for the time being. “You know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience,” said Scott Styris.
Styris predicts the future of SKY
The former all-rounder for New Zealand also hinted that things should go well for Surya. Styris feels that BCCI can consider SKY in the upcoming T20 World Cup. That’s not a bad deal. Rohit Sharma, who leads India in Tests and ODIs, is 37 years old, whereas Suryakumar Yadav is 33.
Therefore, it seems like Gambhir is making the right decision in establishing a long-term captain for the future. During the post-T20 World Cup tour to Zimbabwe, Gill led India for the first time as they won the five-match series 4-1. Gill had led the Gujarat Titans of the Indian Premier League to a depressing eighth-place result earlier in the season.
