Scotland faces off against Switzerland in their next Euros game for this international tournament. The Scots will hope to reclaim victory and get back some of their pride after a thrashing by Germany in their home country in their inaugural match of the tournament. The Swiss will look to topple the Scottish team once again on June 19, 2024, at 8 pm UK time.
Key Things to Know
Before Scotland faced off against Switzerland, they suffered a huge loss to the German side with goals by Wirtz, Musiala, Havertz, Fullkrug, and Can bashing Scotland in a surprise rout. Although the Germans were the favorites in the first game, the Scottish team hoped to at least put up a fight and slide a few past the keeper. However, their dreams were soon dashed in the first half of the game.
Rudiger scored an own goal, helping Scotland in the first few minutes of the game, but things soon turned sour for the Tartans. Scotland is now looking to get a draw or a win to even stay in the group and have any hope of moving on in the tournament. If they lose to Switzerland, they will automatically be out of the Euros, no matter what happens in the Germany and Hungary match.
On the other side of the coin, Switzerland had a more positive showing against Hungary. They put two past the Hungarian keeper in the first half alone, with Duah and Aebischer being the heroes of the game. However, Hungary came back into the game in the second half, showing perhaps a lack of focus, consistency, or fitness from the Swiss.
But, with a win from the Swiss, they will secure second place in their group before facing off against arguably the best Germans in the final group stage fixture.
Team Scotland
Scotland will have to play without Porteous for the Wednesday night fixture, as he received a straight red card in their abysmal game against the Germans in the first match of the Euros. Grant Hanely or McKenna will surely slot into the backline, with Hanley looking the most likely to get the nod. Scottish fans will hope to see Gilmour take the pitch this game, as he was shockingly left off of the starting lineup.
Key players for the Scotland team include Tierney in the back line, Gilmour in the midfield, Robertson as one of the wingers/full-backs, and Shankland.
Team Switzerland
For the opposing team, Switzerland will most likely see Zakaria back on the team sheet after recovering from a slight muscle strain during training last week. Furthermore, Zuber might be back in the squad as he builds up his fitness, whereas Freuler will be absent from the squad as he is suspended after the first match of the tournament.
Key players for Switzerland include Xhaka, the ex-Arsenal man, as the holding midfielder being the anchor of the team, and Duah as the striker up top to try and score goals.
Scotland vs. Switzerland Prediction
Based on the first game, substitutions, suspensions, and overall vibe, we think that Switzerland will topple Scotland 2-0. Scotland had zero shots against Germany In the first game, showing a lack of an attacking threat going forward, whereas Switzerland were able to put two past Hungary in the first 45 minutes of their game.
