San Francisco Giants Make History In 7-2 Comeback Win Versus Mets

San Francisco Giants

In their last three games, the San Francisco Giants have become historic. They’ve managed to accomplish something that hasn’t been done since 1932.

In their last three games, the Giants have mounted incredible comebacks against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets. In each of those comebacks, San Francisco was down by at least four runs and came back to win. They’re the first team to do this since the Miami Marlins did it to the Giants in 1999 and the first team to do it on the road since the 1932 St. Louis Cardinals.

On the one hand, it’s concerning to see a team get down by this much repeatedly against two of the lower-tier teams in the league. But on the other, it’s amazing to see history get made like this. Nobody else in all of baseball has shown an ability to bounce back from deficits like this and it will be interesting to see how long the Giants can keep this up.

There have been clutch performers in every game for the ballclub. The team has seen clutch performances from players like Luis Matos, Patrick Bailey, and Matt Chapman. Chapman, especially, has been essential with several miraculous defensive gems and clutch home runs that have helped lead the team.

This game might have been the most dramatic of the stretch. Despite a home run by Jorge Soler and another run brought home by Luis Matos, the San Francisco Giants were down by a score of 6-2 after the fifth inning. Kyle Harrison started, but it was obvious that it wasn’t the ace’s night.

By the eighth inning, things looked terrible for San Francisco. Enter Patrick Bailey, who’s emerged as one of the top young catchers in all of baseball. Bailey launched a baseball into orbit for a grand slam which gave the Giants the lead.

Mike Yastrmzeski homered to make it 8-6, but it can never be easy for the San Francisco Giants. Two errors in the ninth inning made it 8-7 with one out for closer Camilo Doval. Despite that, Doval managed to record a 22-pitch save after a strikeout followed by an amazing gem of a play by Matt Chapman.

The last time a streak like this took place when a team came back from four-plus runs in three straight games, the San Francisco Giants were on the receiving end against the Marlins. It’s nice not just to be on the positive end of that statistic but to see a team that was left behind in fourth place rebound and fight like crazy to get back to a .500 record.

Few teams had a rougher start to the season than the San Francisco Giants. They appeared directionless to open the year after seeing 12 players on the Injured List at one point. They were almost 10 games under .500 and had to rely on several young players that non-Giants fans likely wouldn’t recognize to get things going.

Luis Matos and Heliot Ramos got things going as soon as they came up, with Matos being named NL Player of the Week last week after having massive performances against the Colorado Rockies. Those games seemed to get the team back on track after having fallen to fourth place in the competitive NL West.

In addition to the last three games, there was another dubious statistic that the San Francisco Giants managed to achieve. They gave up grand slams in back-to-back days to the Pirates, one of them embarrassingly to Joey Bart, yet managed to come back and win both games. In doing so, they became only the fifth team in MLB history to do so.

The biggest contributor to their success has been Matt Chapman. Against the Pirates, Chapman went 5-13 with three home runs and six RBIs for a batting average of .565. Against the Mets, Chapman went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored, but most importantly, he saved the game with another highlight reel web gem showcasing why he’s a dominant force with his glove.
