Report: San Francisco 49ers Tried To Acquire Justin Jefferson In The Offseason

The San Francisco 49ers have had a busy offseason. The Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams contract talks dominated the airwaves. After losing in the Super Bowl, the team is desperate to get back. Reports indicate they tried to make a big swing in the offseason. With the Minnesota Vikings going through a transition period, the 49ers reportedly called about the availability of All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

San Francisco 49ers Tried To Acquire Justin Jefferson

A source told ESPN that the San Francisco 49ers tried to acquire Justin Jefferson during the pre-draft process. Many thought Aiyuk would be traded in order to upgrade the position. Jefferson certainly would have been an upgrade. However, the talks did not go anywhere. The report indicated the Vikings never considered moving on from the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. It wasn’t just San Francisco that called to inquire about the availability of Jefferson.

Other reports said the Jets and Colts called about the talented wide receiver as well. After contract talks took longer than many expected, teams wondered whether Minnesota was looking to move on. They already had Jordan Addison and have always drafted receivers well. However, the Vikings made the decision to make Jefferson one of the highest-paid wide receivers in NFL history.

Any Effect On The Season?

The report comes as the 49ers and Vikings are set to match up. However, it is interesting that the San Francisco 49ers‘ offseason calls continue to be leaked. It is clear the team was not happy with the current construction and was trying to make upgrades. Sometimes, these reports can erode team chemistry as players find out the team was not committed to them long-term. Ultimately, the team should be able to tune out this type of noise. Now that the season has started, the team is focused on one thing: getting back to the Super Bowl.

It will not be easy for the San Francisco 49ers. Star running back Christian McCaffrey was put on injured reserve this week, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season. Last year, the team was one of the least injured teams in the NFL. This year, they may have to overcome a few more of them. The Justin Jefferson report is interesting, but ultimately, it means nothing now that the season has begun.
