San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Reveals Desperate Attempt To Hire Bill Belichick

San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft Logan Thomas, Bill Belichick, Fred Warner

The San Francisco 49ers have had some of the most heartbreaking seasons over the past half-decade. Despite being in the Super Bowl twice, they have lost both times in gut-wrenching fashion. When they didn’t make the Super Bowl, their playoff exits also left fans in shock. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has made it no secret that this team expects to win it all this year. In a press conference today, he revealed he made a desperate plea to former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to join his staff.

Kyle Shanahan made an appearance on “The TK Show,” a podcast hosted by The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. Around the 21-minute mark, they start talking about Bill Belichick. He was in the running for many coaching positions but was ultimately skipped over. Kawakami asked Shanahan whether he tried to recruit the legendary coach.

“I did. I threw it out to him. He loves football so much…I can’t believe that he’s not a head coach of a team right now. I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me. And the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick, but I know he just loves ball in the simplest form. So I threw it all out to him. Like whatever he’d want to do.”

Kawakami specifically asked whether he meant the defensive coordinator position, and the young head coach confirmed that was where he wanted Bill Belichick. He revealed the six-time Super Bowl winner “politely” declined the offer. It isn’t a surprise, as he likely wanted a head coaching gig. Instead, he will take at least a year off and do some media, which should provide fans with great insight on the game of football.

Can The Defense Be Dominant Again?

While the San Francisco 49ers had a good defense last year, they weren’t as dominant as they have been in past years, especially in the passing game. Part of this was injuries to key members of the secondary, but the team definitely missed DeMeco Ryans, who left to coach the Houston Texans. Nick Sorensen was an internal hire who will be tasked with getting the defense back to championship form. They are also hoping for big seasons from Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.

While many teams are under pressure this season, the San Francisco 49ers have the most. They already have a contract dispute with one of their star players, Brandon Aiyuk. The extension for Brock Purdy is coming soon, which will tie up a significant portion of the salary cap. They are the favorite in the NFC, but the NFL is often unpredictable. Long-term success is not guaranteed.  If the 49ers are going to win one, 2024 is the time.
