San Diego Padres Trade for Tanner Scott During 2024 MLB Trade Deadline

Tanner Scott, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres are going for it during the 2024 season as they have just agreed to trade for southpaw reliever Tanner Scott and right-hander Bryan Hoeing from the Miami Marlins in exchange for lefty Robby Snelling, right-hander Adam Mazur, infielder Graham Pauley and infielder Jay Beshears. This trade is going to send shockwaves throughout Major League Baseball so let’s take a closer look at this deal and explain exactly what this means for the San Diego Padres and the Miami Marlins going forward.

What does getting Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing mean for the San Diego Padres?

Tanner Scott was one of the biggest names available at the MLB Trade Deadline as he has shown to be a dominant reliever and the San Diego Padres have just landed him. So far this season, Scott is 6-5 with a 1.18 ERA and 18 saves in 45.2 innings (44 games). Adding him will likely help move the bullpen pieces around as he will become the Padres’ closer and have Robert Suarez become the set-up man. This is a win-now move for the San Diego Padres as Tanner Scott is a free agent after this season, but this shows how all in general manager AJ Preller and the front office is on the 2024 season.

Don’t forget about Bryan Hoeing, who has a lot more control as he is still pre-arbitration in 2025 and does not become arbitration eligible until the 2026 season. He has been doing well as he is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 30.0 innings this year. With the Padres 6.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and holding the final spot in the NL Wild Card, this is a great move for right now.

What does this trade mean for the Miami Marlins?

The Miami Marlins have been very active this trade deadline and continue to stockpile minor leaguers. Just this deadline, they have added a lot of quality pieces but this trade in particular saw the team acquire MLB’s 44th-ranked prospect. This trade saw the San Diego Padres get the second, fourth, sixth, and 29th-ranked prospects in their own system to make this trade happen. The Marlins may just be the biggest winners during this year’s trade deadline.
