San Diego Padres Jackson Merrill Comes Up Incredibly Clutch

San Diego Padres Center Fielder Jackson Merrill comes up clutch.

San Diego Padres Center Fielder Jackson Merrill has consistently come up clutch when his team has needed him most. Sunday afternoon was no different for the standout rookie. Merrill hit a walk-off home run against New York Mets Closer Edwin Diaz to help lift the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory. This is his second walk-off home run this season for Merrill as he also hit one on June 12 against the Oakland Athletics.

Merrill leads the league with six go-ahead or game-tying home runs in the eighth inning or later this season. When there is a close game late, opposing pitchers do not want to see Merrill striding up to the plate. He is hitting .288 this season with 19 home runs and 72 RBI. He is 19th in the league in batting average and tied for the rookie lead with 19 round-trippers. Will Merrill be able to continue being so clutch as the San Diego Padres eye a deep playoff run?

Jackson Merrill Career Summary

Merrill made his debut with the San Diego Padres at the beginning of the season and has taken the league by storm ever since. Merrill is closing in on Pittsburgh Pirates Starting Pitcher Paul Skenes as the favorite to win NL Rookie of the Year. Merrill’s odds are currently -105. Merrill’s stellar rookie season led to him being named an all-star earlier this season.
