San Antonio Spurs: Best 2023-24 Offseason Moves to Get Wembanyama Help

Victor Wembanyama

The future is looking bright for the San Antonio Spurs. Last season’s #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft Victor Wembanyama lived up to the hype. In his first season, Wemby averaged 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, won Rookie of the Year, made All-Defensive 1st team, and led the NBA in blocked shots.

He did all this while staying relatively healthy, playing in 71 of 82 games. The Spurs could not have asked for much more. Wemby looks well on his way to being a superstar in this league for years to come.

However, the Spurs as a team did not fare so well. San Antonio finished with a record of 22-60 and 14th in the Western Conference. The Spurs have a high ceiling with Wembanyama, now to see what they can surround him with this offseason.

Wemby’s Stellar Rookie Season

Victor Wembanyama was touted as a generational talent years before he was drafted into the NBA. Standing 7 feet 4 inches tall, he has the athleticism and ball-handling abilities of a guard. His wingspan is 8 feet, which allows him to bother nearly any opposing player shot, and get in passing lanes. If you were to fire up NBA 2k and create the most dominant player to play the measurables and attributes would look identical to Wemby.

At 20 years old, Wemby averaged 21 and 10 and was the first rookie to ever make All-Defensive 1st team, while also winning Rookie of the Year. It’s safe to say at this point he has not only lived up to the expectations but even exceeded them.

Spurs Need A Veteran Guard

The 2023-24 San Antonio Spurs were one of the youngest teams in the NBA. Not a single player on the roster was above the age of 29. The Spurs should look into adding am older guard that can help the young players develop.

The name that pops into my head immediately is Chris Paul. Paul has 1 year left on his contract with the Warriors, but it is a non-guaranteed salary, so Golden State could waive him if they want. I expect the Warriors to part ways with Paul in the next few weeks. Paul is one of the best point guards in NBA history and his experience paired up with Spurs Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich would be very beneficial for a young Spurs team, especially Wemby.

The big question here is if Paul, who just turned 39 years old, would be willing to go to a team that doesn’t have championship aspirations this upcoming season. San Antonio should be exploring this option because it could be a great fit.

2024-25 Spurs Outlook

The goal for the 2024-25 San Antonio Spurs is progression. They are going to want to see Wemby take another step forward, but also for the team around him to perform better than they did a year ago. The Spurs know there isn’t a big rush to become a championship contender, but they would like to see the individual talent development translate to more wins this season.

I see the Spurs adding a few pieces to make them a much more viable team than last season. For a team that won just 22 games, a realistic goal for them should be 35 wins. Spurs fans should be excited about this up-and-coming team.
